Your Itinerary In Detail

8-Night Tour

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

More than just a city, Tokyo is a fascinating juxtaposition of diverse neighbourhoods, skyscrapers, neon signs, temples and traditional shrines. After your transfer, settle into your hotel and take time to relax after your flight. Then, the city is all yours!

Day 2 - 5: Tokyo

Tokyo has many treasures in store such as the Asakusa district and the Senso-ji temple, Ueno Park and its many museums, the Shibuya district and Shinjuku.

Want to see the whole of the megalopolis from above? Then head for the Tokyo Skytree, which rises to 634 metres, and the Tokyo Tower, the city's symbol.

For quiet walks in places steeped in history, go to Hamarikyu, the Japanese garden located between the buildings of Tokyo, or to the gardens of the imperial palace or to the Meiji-jingu sanctuary. Unless you prefer the excitement of Ginza, the chic district of Tokyo, or Harajuku, its avant-garde district?

Day 6: Hakone - Mount Fuji

From Odawara, you will leave for Hakone - Mount Fuji by shinkansen train and local train. Between Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula, the Hakone region offers a wide range of natural sites, museums and onsens. Suggestions include Gora-koen Park, Chokoku-no-mori Open Air Museum and Hakone-jinja Shrine.

You can also see Mount Fuji on an unusual boat trip across Lake Ashi-no-ko, or take a walk along the old Tokaido Road, lined with cedar and pine trees.

Day 7 - 9: Kyoto

Kyoto, the former imperial capital, combines the past with the present, and the present with the future. Millennial, artistic, spiritual and gourmet: a visit to Kyoto is an opportunity to discover the origins of the Japanese soul and is an essential part of a stay in Japan. Experience an evening stroll through Gion, Kyoto's lively and colourful geisha district. Discover Kyoto's most iconic district, filled with tradition and history.

Want to discover even more? Then we advise you to schedule a day trip to Nara, a destination covered by your Japan Rail Pass. On the way back, a stop at the Fushimi-Inari Taisha shrine and its thousands of vermilion torii gates is a must.

Day 10: Departure from Kyoto

11-Night Tour

Day 1 - 6:

Identical to the 8-night tour.

Day 7 - 8: Osaka

After Hakone - Mount Fuji, head to the bustling city of Osaka! We advise you to discover Osaka's medieval castle, with its park full of plum and cherry trees, but also the city centre and its Nakanoshima island, with its rose park in the middle of the buildings, as well as Utsubo park, an oasis of coolness in the business district, without forgetting the Tennoji district and its Buddhist temple.

Don't forget to visit Dotonbori, the liveliest district with its unique atmosphere! Taste Osaka's specialties: takoyaki, okonomiyaki and many others.

Day 9: Okayama

From Osaka, travel to the feudal city of Okayama located on the Sea of Japan. Explore the beautiful Korakuen Garden, one of the 3 most famous gardens in Japan during the Edo period. Don't miss the artistic island of Naoshima, one hour from Okayama.

Naoshima Island is world famous for its modern art museums, the architecture of some of its buildings and the outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the island. If you consider yourself less artistic and more romantic, the city of Kurashiki, less than 20 minutes away by train, will surely seduce you!

End of your stay identical to Days 7 to 10 of the 8-night tour.

14-Night Tour

The start of the tour will be identical to the 11-night tour, except for the Okayama stage where you will enjoy an extra night.

Day 11: Kinosaki Onsen

Depart at noon for Kinosaki Onsen (about 3 hours and 20 minutes, included in your JR Pass), and check in to your ryokan, traditional Japanese accommodation. Kinosaki Onsen is a picturesque village but also one of the best places in Japan to experience hot springs - onsens. In addition to the baths in your ryokan, you can visit one or more of the 7 public onsens in the village, which are free to enter.

Wear the yukata - traditional Japanese clothing - provided by your ryokan and stroll along the willow-lined canals and traditional shops towards the onsens. All offer a variety of baths, some of which are unexpected: a hot bath on the roof of a building, a "penguin" sauna covered in ice, an outdoor bath lined with Japanese maples, or another in a cave!

The tour ends in the same way as the 11-night tour, except for Kyoto, where you will enjoy an extra night.

For all tours:

The Japan Rail Pass allows train travel on JR lines during its validity period, such as travel from Kyoto/Osaka, or travel from Tokyo (Nikko and Kamakura), as well as the boat and train from Hiroshima to Miyajima.

Note: It is not necessary to have a Japan Rail Pass that covers your entire stay. In fact, it is only cost-effective if it is used for the long journeys between the various stages of the trip (especially by Shinkansen), which are very expensive. In big cities like Tokyo, not all public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and trains are relatively cheap. Therefore, providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 7 days would not be cost effective but, on the contrary, would considerably increase the cost of your trip.

What is a Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass is a special train pass for foreign travellers visiting Japan. This pass allows unlimited travel for 7 or 14 consecutive days on all Japan Railways (JR) trains throughout Japan. With your Japan Rail Pass in hand, all you have to do is go to the station, show your pass to the ticket inspector at the entrance gates and board a JR train. You will find all the details in your travel diary.

The Japan Rail Pass does not cover (which are not included in your package):

- Subways and buses in Tokyo and Kyoto (you can pay by prepaid transport card)

- Private lines (which are not JR)

- Transfers between stations and hotels (by foot, bus, taxi or underground)

- Nozomi and Mizuho (very fast Shinkansen)

- Train journeys outside the validity of the pass

New: For stays in 4* hotels, a Japan Rail Pass "Green" (1st class) is included in your offer.

Please note that since a few months, for Shinkansen trains only, bulky luggage must be declared (free of charge) at the station before boarding. If this is not done, a fee of ¥1000 (€8) will be charged by the ticket inspector. Subject to availability. There is also a very efficient hotel-to-hotel luggage delivery system that can be booked at the hotel reception.
