Your Destination —
The southernmost town on the French island of Corsica, this dramatic clifftop town is a true hidden gem, and well worth a visit if you’re planning a Corsican escape. Characterised by its unique position, perched on top of limestone cliffs overlooking the sea, Bonifacio houses a myriad of historic chapels, monasteries, and authentic Corsican restaurants, and is the perfect place to get stuck in to the true island lifestyle.
In the morning, take advantage of the cool weather to tackle the Staircase of King Aragon Alfonso V, 187 steps leading down to the sea, supposedly built by the King of Aragon’s guards in just one night, before taking a dip in the stunning waters. Alternatively, walk along the cliffs to the Pertusato lighthouse, where you’ll find some of the best views of the surrounding coastline of Corsica, and the island’s characteristic turquoise waters.
On your return to the town, indulge in some local cuisine, including clams stuffed with sheep’s cheese and figatellu, a pork and liver sausage. You’ll find the majority of the town’s restaurants overlooking the port, where it’s possible to catch a ferry to Sardinia, 20km away over the Strait of Bonifacio.
