Toronto
Toronto is Canada's largest city, with more restaurants and live theatres than anywhere else in the country. From the famous CN Tower to the Harbourfront Centre with its lakeside shopping and dining, to the new fashionable Distillery District, Toronto is deservedly the most popular gateway to Canada.
For first-time visitors, the best place to get a feel for the city is by making a visit to the CN Tower, an unmissable attraction in Downtown where you can admire the city streets and Lake Ontario from 553m high! For cultural sights closer to the ground, check out the Royal Ontario Museum or the Art Gallery of Ontario. At the end of a long day, fill up with a classic plate of poutine, an iconic Canadian dish of fries, gravy, and cheese curds - perfect on a cold winter day in the city.
To explore a unique city attraction, head to Casa Loma, a charming Gothic Revival mansion in the heart of the city, while travellers looking to do some shopping during their stay have come to the right place, as the city offers a fantastic mix of high-end designers and boutique stores. As the sun sets, watch the city come to life at the 13-acre Distillery District, where you’ll find an array of restaurants and cafes boasting delicious cuisine and refreshing drinks for the perfect evening.
Montreal
Regarded as Canada’s cultural capital, Montréal is a unique island-city on the St Lawrence River, and the perfect place for big-city thrills mixed with charming attractions. For a taste of its old-world French atmosphere, visit the cobbled streets of Old Montréal, admiring Notre Dame Basilica and the charming Place Jacques-Cartier, which feels like it’s been plucked straight from a European town.
To escape the bustling city, take a stroll through Mount Royal Park, set atop the mountain after which the city is named. After climbing to the top, you can admire fantastic views over the city’s skyscrapers and monuments below, before settling down in a restaurant to savour some authentic Montreal cuisine. Don’t miss French-inspired options like the Breton pastry kouign amann, or get a taste for Montreal’s Haitian population by trying griot - a marinated pork shoulder that tastes like it’s straight from the Caribbean isles.
While foodies will be happy in this vibrant city, there are also plenty of sights to tempt culture-vultures. Head to the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts to explore Canadian art or wander the tranquil Montréal Botanical Garden, while if you’re ready for a day of thrills, La Ronde is an extensive theme park on nearby St. Helen’s Island.
Quebec
Québec truly feels like a country within a country, a distinct place of francophone linguistic and cultural identity within greater Canada. Québec's embrace of terroir, its language, and its passion for everything from winter snow to wine to gastronomy, is something else that encompasses both distinctly North American and European identities.
Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, is walkable and safe. Stroll the cobblestone streets of the only fortified city north of Mexico and explore its gorgeous outdoors nearby.
Its history, friendly vibe and myriad attractions make it a standout travel destination throughout the year.
