In Northern Portugal, a short drive inland from Porto, straddling the banks of a gentle river, lies the elegant village of Amarante, which has been described as one of the most beautiful places on earth. With verdant trees drooping into the river and elegant, ancient buildings, Amarante could be the setting for a fairy tale. In its centre, overlooking the Tamega River, the ancient bridge and the Saint Gonçalo Church and Convent, you'll find a grand and imposing 16th century palace.

Totally renovated in 2001 and now one of the most emblematic Boutique Hotels in Portugal, the boutique hotel Casa da Calçada Relais & Châteaux is located in the historic centre of Amarante, half way between Porto and the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley. Its rooms and suites offer extraordinary views over the river and the historic centre.

You'll be tempted to simply enjoy every possible moment right at the hotel, but it is also perfectly located to explore the surrounding attractions. Between 2 important wine regions, you could not be better placed for serious wine tourism. To the northwest are the historic towns of Guimarães and Braga, Porto is a half hour west and the attractions of the Douro region start a few minutes south.

Largo Cerqueira's Bar - With a nice view over the Casa da Calçada vineyards, a bar service is offered in the summer months so that you can relax in the outdoor café with a panoramic view, and enjoy the sunset with a bottle of brut sparkling wine from Quinta da Calçada’s own vineyards.

Your Time —

The boutique hotel Casa da Calçada Relais & Châteaux has 2 swimming pools framed by the gardens and vineyards, with a magnificent view over the river Tâmega for its guests’ enjoyment. Around the pools, you can also enjoy a solarium, with reclining chairs and bar service. Spreading between the main house and the farm Quinta da Calçada, in the hotel gardens you can relax and admire the beauty of camellias, pomegranate trees, bougainvilleas, palm trees, cinnamon trees and many enchanting blooms.

For a more active day out, take some time to go for a bike ride through the historic centre of Amarante or along the river Tâmega’s green banks, on the cross-country bycicles the hotel has at its guests’ disposal.

Your Journey —

Flights: The flights included are with either a scheduled or no-frills airline and are subject to live availability and prices can change. You can choose your preferred departure times during the booking process. Please select your flight options carefully as departure and arrival airports may differ.

Transfers: Transfers are not included (distance between airport and hotel is approximately (65 km or 45 minutes)

Car Hire: Members who opt for a flight inclusive package can add car hire at the next stage of the booking process.  Just for you: complimentary parking at the hotel

Meet & Greet —

If you are driving to the airport in the UK, and book our package including flights, you may wish to add our 'Meet and Greet' service. Take the hassle out of airport parking and have an official representative take your car on arrival, and it will be waiting for you on your return.

This can be added at the next stage of booking process where available.

Car Hire —

Please note you cannot be guaranteed a specific make of car within a certain group.

The minimum age for driving a hire car in Portugal is 18 and drivers must have held a full driving licence for a least 1 year. You must present a full valid driving licence on collection of the vehicle and in some cases a credit card or cash deposit.

ATOL Protected —

If you book a package which includes flights, your contract will be with Voyage Privé. The air holiday package(s) shown are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number is 10170.

If you book a package which does not include flights, then ATOL protection does not apply. Your contract will be with the provider of the accommodation and not Voyage Privé. Voyage Privé acts only as agent for the accommodation provider.

Travel Documents —

Flight Inclusive Offers -

You will receive an email confirming your booking within the next 48 hours.

Please check all details on this confirmation are correct.  If there are any discrepancies, please notify us as soon as possible.

The airline is ticketless and therefore, you will not receive any hard copy documents.  You will however, receive an email from us detailing your flight information and reference number to enable you to manage your booking online via the airline website.

You will also receive an accommodation voucher for presentation at the hotel reception at point of check-in.

If you have booked transfers, 'Meet & Greet', car hire or airport lounges, you will receive a separate voucher for each of these services.  Please note that transfer vouchers are sent directly from the transfer supplier.

Please do make sure that you either add Voyage Privé to your ‘Safe Senders’ list or check your ‘Junk mail’ regularly for your travel documents.

We will send all documents out as early as possible (subject to full payment being received) but you should receive all your documentation at least 10 days prior to departure.
