Muscat, the capital of Oman, offers a blend of ancient history and modernity, with skyscrapers standing alongside historic monuments. Be sure to explore the city's highlights, including the 16th-century Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Al Mirani, overlooking Muscat Harbour. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

This itinerary sets the scene for an exciting exploration of Muscat, allowing you to immerse yourself in its rich history and vibrant culture.

Overnight at hotel.

DAY 2: MUSCAT (CITY TOUR)

You will have breakfast at the hotel.

At 08:30, the vehicle will be delivered to your hotel in Muscat.

There will be a tour of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Oman and one of the most popular places to visit in Muscat. Accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers at a time, the structure features a mix of architectural styles. (Closed on Fridays)

Next, you will visit the Royal Opera House, which is Oman's premier destination for music, arts, and culture. The complex includes a theatre, auditorium, landscaped gardens, art centre, and cultural markets.

Next, you'll explore the historic Muttrah area, where you can visit the traditional Muttrah Souk, a market steeped in history dating back some two centuries.

Your next stop will be the Bait Al Zubair Museum, with its wealth of information and exhibits on the country's culture, tradition, and heritage. You'll also make a quick photo stop at Al Alam Palace, one of the royal residences of Sultan Qaboos, as well as Mirani and Jalali forts.

Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 3: MUSCAT - JABAL AKHDAR

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, get ready for an adventurous day on the way to the Wahiba Sands.

The drive along the coast offers tantalizing glimpses of the sea. Stop at Bimah Abyss, around 200 metres inland, where fresh and saltwater mix to create a turquoise pool. Then descend a concrete staircase for safe access to this picturesque pool, where visitors can swim among friendly fish that gently tickle their toes.

Then stop off at Wadi Shab. This wadi is famous for its emerald green pools, spectacular rock formations, and lush vegetation contrasting with the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors can enjoy a hike through the rugged terrain, swim in the crystal clear pools, and exploring hidden caves and waterfalls along the way.

Arrive at the desert camp.

The Wahiba Sands, a vast expanse of undulating red and white sand and dunes rising up to 200 metres, are also home to a variety of flora and fauna. The ever-changing patterns of the dunes are a photographer's delight. Take part in adventurous activities such as dune driving and watch the sunset from the top of the dunes.

Dinner and overnight in camp.

DAY 4: WAHIBA SANDS - JABAL AKHDAR

Breakfast at the hotel.

After checking out of your room, head for Jabal Akhdar via Wadi Bani Khalid.

Discover Wadi Bani Khalid, popular all year round as it doesn't even dry up during the summer, and where you can enjoy the large emerald pools surrounded by tall palm trees. The rocky canyon and cliffs of the Hajar Mountains make it breathtakingly beautiful and an incredible place to enjoy a tranquil nature walk.

Arrive in Jabal Akhdar and check into the hotel.

Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5: JABAL AKHDAR

DAY 6: JABAL AKHDAR - MUSCAT

After breakfast at the hotel, you will return to your room and leave for Muscat via Nizwa.

On the way, visit the Nizwa souk, the oldest souk (market) in Oman and a bustling centre of activity. The Nizwa souk is entirely surrounded by a wall and clearly separated from the rest of the city. A visit to the souk is a great way to interact with the locals, learn about life in Oman, and take home some fun souvenirs.

We will then visit Nizwa Fort, this ancient fort with sections dating back to the ninth century is a stunning example of historic Omani architecture. Nizwa Fort not only boasts the largest tower in Oman, but is also the only fort in the region to have a cylindrical main tower.

We continue our journey to Jabal Akhdar with a stop at Birkat al Mauz, where you can take a leisurely stroll through its oases and date palm plantations.

8-NIGHT SELF-DRIVE TRIP

DAY 3: MUSCAT - NAKHAL - AL HAMRA (VIA WADI BANI AWF)

Have breakfast at the hotel and check out of your room.

Then head to the vegetable and spice market of Seeb.

Continue to Barka Fort, an 18th-century fort that stands out along Barka's busy coastline, surrounded by several adjacent watchtowers.

Our next stop is at the Nakhl Springs. The hot springs are not exactly hot, just lukewarm. Natural spring water is channeled into the falaj system to irrigate the surrounding date palm plantations, and you can dip your toe or wander in the trickling water. Enjoy a walk through the village with its date palms and falaj system. At the springs, you can observe the local inhabitants.

Photo stop at the Nakhl fort perched on a rocky outcrop.

We then continue our journey through the spectacular Wadi Bani Awf. This stretch of tarmac road is very adventurous and only suitable for those in good physical condition, as it includes steep bends and bumpy roads.

Stop at the picturesque mountain village of Bilad Sayt, framed by dramatic mountains. The road winds through the mountains to the village of Al Hamra, characterised by its mud houses and date palm plantations.

DAY 4: AL HAMRA - NIZWA

Have breakfast at the hotel and set off in the direction of Jebal Shams.

Then visit Misfat al Abriyeen. This "mountain oasis" has it all: agricultural terraces and gardens, traditional mud houses built on solid rock, and ancient falaj systems used for irrigation. As you wander through the old passageways, you'll discover first-hand the way of life of the villagers and explore the date palm plantations.

Don't miss a visit to the old village of Al Hamra / Bait Safah Museum. The museum showcases various aspects of Omani life, including traditional clothing, household items, handicrafts, and tools used in daily activities such as farming, fishing, and handicraft production.

Then drive to Nizwa and check into the hotel.

Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5: NIZWA - JABAL AKHDAR - NIZWA

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at your hotel in Nizwa.

Next, we'll visit Nizwa Fort, an ancient fort with sections dating back to the 9th century, an outstanding example of historic Omani architecture. Nizwa Fort not only boasts the largest tower in Oman but is also the only fort in the region to have a cylindrical main tower.

We continue our journey to Jabal Akhdar with a stop at Birkat al Mauz, where you can take a leisurely stroll through its oasis and date palm plantations.

In the afternoon, stroll through the villages of Wadi Bani Habib (the village of old houses) and the villages of Saiq and Al Ain in Jabal Akhdar. These villages offer spectacular views of impressive peaks, gorges, and wadis. Rosewater is distilled in the villagers' homes.

Wadi Bani Khalid lies between several magnificent mountains and passes through several villages.

Continue to Sur and visit the Dhows factory.

On arrival in Ras Al Hadd, check in at the Al Asala Resort.

At 8.30 pm, make your way to Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve to watch the turtles. Trained guides will accompany you to the beach to observe the turtles nesting on the sand. Oman is home to several important nesting sites for four different species of turtle: the endangered green turtle, the olive ridley turtle, the loggerhead turtle and the critically endangered hawksbill turtle.

Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 8: AL ASALA RESORT - MUSCAT

After breakfast at the hotel, you will hand in your room key and return to Muscat. The drive along the coast offers tantalising glimpses of the sea. En route, visit Wadi Shab. This wadi is famous for its emerald green pools, spectacular rock formations and lush vegetation contrasting with the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors can enjoy hiking through the rugged terrain, swimming in the crystal-clear pools and exploring hidden caves and waterfalls.

Stop off at Bimah Abyss, a water-filled chasm located around 200 metres inland. It contains freshwater mixed with seawater, giving it a turquoise colour. A large concrete staircase stands out from the natural landscape but offers a less precarious way down to the picturesque pool. Here people can swim with small fish known to nibble their toes harmlessly.

A beautiful and peaceful country, which is home to many of the most amazing landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is also known to be the most traditional, unexplored and welcoming country in the Middle East. Unlike neighboring Dubai and Qatar, Oman has managed to keep its traditions largely intact. With a great coastline boasting dizzying cliffs, impressive mountains, numerous undiscovered sites and overwhelming hospitality, Oman is an ideal destination for adventure lovers seeking a fascinating and less-frequented destination.

The coastal road from Salalah to the border with Yemen offers spectacular views, the many wadis with natural pools offer unique places to enjoy the outdoors, and its historical heritage hides treasures such as the ruins of Manah or the various forts that extend through Rustaq , Bahla and Nizwa. Without a doubt, Oman promises visitors an exciting and unconventional experience.
