Jodhpur appears as a comforting oasis for the traveller who has just crossed the Thar Desert. The old city is surrounded by a wall with seven gates, which was erected in the mid-16th century and covers a perimeter of nearly 10 km, which also protects it from the sand.

Visit the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, named after its current owner, the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Built on top of a hill overlooking the city, it opens through a succession of seven monumental gates. On one of the Iohapols, iron gates, you will discover the handprints of the widows of Maharaja Man Singh, who immolated themselves on his funeral pyre in 1843. There are many courtyards surrounded by palaces with carved facades.

The fort's museum contains palanquins, gondolas for elephant travel, weapons, swords, daggers and small cannons. Many rooms contain collections of miniatures, the Takhat Mahal room is entirely decorated with mirrors and paintings, with coloured glass balls hanging from the ceiling and the "Jankhi Mahal" contains an amazing collection of royal cradles.
