Your 8-Night Iceland and Greenland Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavík
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel in Reykjavik. Take a stroll in the centre of this small town, which is also the northernmost capital in the world. You can even ask at the reception of your hotel for a wake-up call show of the Northern Lights. Overnight in Hotel Klettur or similar.

Day 2: Reykjavík - Golden Circle Excursion - Reykjavík
Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before embarking on your Golden Circle Excursion. The Golden Circle tour allows you to visit some of Iceland‘s most stunning sights; Geysir geothermal area, the waterfall Gullfoss, and the UNESCO site Þingvellir National Park as well as to learn about growing vegetables in a country which doesn’t get much daylight for most of the year.

Geysir geothermal area is in South Iceland, near Laugarvatn Lake. This area is named after the biggest, and now mostly dormant, geyser 'Geysir' and all geysers in the world owe their name to it. The biggest attraction today is the active Strokkur, which shoots up a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every few minutes.

Gullfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland and rightly so. The three-step waterfall is a part of the glacial river Hvítá and falls into a 62-metre (105 ft.) deep canyon. For the first half of the 20th century, there were ideas about using the waterfall to generate electricity, but thankfully nothing came of it.

The UNESCO site Þingvellir National Park is geologically and historically significant. Apart from being the location of the oldest parliament in the world, Alþingi, it is also a place where you can see the Mid-Atlantic ridge above ground. The Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates pull the country apart by a couple of centimeters per year. You will then return to your hotel for an evening at leisure. Overnight in Hotel Klettur or similar.
Day 3: South Shore Excursion
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will get to enjoy a fantastic excursion to the southern shores of Iceland. Highlights will include Sólheimajökull, Vík, Reynisfjara, Reynisdrangar, Skógafoss  and Seljalandsfoss.

South Iceland is special for that it is one of the flattest regions on the island. Because of that, most of all grain farming in Iceland is done there. The high mountains to the north, shield the area from the harshest winds from the north.

Among the stops on this tour are at the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. We recommend you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to walk behind it.

Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. The waterfall was also used in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  You will also stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach, with the Reynisdrangar rock formations and columnar basalt. It is one of the most spectacular beaches in Iceland but can be dangerous, and we kindly ask our guests not to go too close to the ocean and go by guidelines.

In 1973 a United States Navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur, in the South Coast of Iceland. Fortunately, everyone in that plane survived. Later it turned out that the pilot had simply switched over to the wrong fuel tank. The remains are still on the sand very close to the sea. There is actually no road or clear track to the plane wreck and it takes a bit longer walk to reach the plane wreck.

Additionally, you will stop by Sólheimajökull and walk up to a small lake which has formed in front of the retreating glacier. You will then return back at your hotel for an evening at leisure. Overnight in Hotel Klettur or similar.
Day 4: Reykjavík - Ilulissat
Following breakfast in the hotel, transfer to the airport. Welcome to Greenland! Transfer from the airport to your hotel upon arrival in Greenland by a public bus. Day 5: Ilulissat - Cruise among the icebergs

Today you will embark on a memorable cruise (3 hours) among the icebergs of the Ilulissat fjord - an unforgettable experience! If you are lucky, you can also spot seals or whales that regularly reside in these waters. You will make stops to contemplate the blocks of ice that come off the coast, creating thunderous explosions that break the absolute silence of the bay. Hot tea and coffee will be served during the excursion. English guide + VOS assistant are included. This is a regular shared excursion. Return to Ilulissat and enjoy a free afternoon with dinner under your own arrangements. Overnight at Hotel Hvide Falk 3* or similar. Members choosing the upgrade to a premium package will stay at the Hotel Arctic 4*.

Your guide in charge of the sled will lead you to a vantage point over Disko Bay, and if the ice is thick enough, you will cross stretches of frozen sea. These landscapes are impressive!
