The Phonm Penh must-sees
Visit Phonm Penh's must-sees: the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda - for a most memorable day! Start your day with a visit to the Royal Palace, originally built in 1866 by the grandfather of the current King of Cambodia.
The palace is a complex of splendid royal buildings with classical Khmer roofs, ornamental gilding and the intricate layout of its defensive walls, presenting a great mix of Khmer architecture and a slight French touch. It includes the official residence of the royal family and parts of the huge palace enclosure that are partially open to the public.
Head to the nearby Silver Pagoda, home to many national treasures, including numerous gold and jewelled Buddha statues. Perched on the grounds of the royal palace, it is the country's holiest temple. Visit the National Museum, designed in Khmer style by a French archaeologist and painter in 1917, and devoted exclusively to Khmer art and sculpture.
Discover the history of Cambodia from the "golden age" of Angkor, with an excellent collection of Khmer art and sculpture from archaeological sites all over Cambodia.
Take time to learn more about the turbulent years of the Khmer Rouge with a visit to Tuol Sleng, a high school turned interrogation prison known as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge era and now a genocide museum dedicated to presenting the sad story of the thousands of innocent Cambodians who were tortured within its walls. Visit the museum, passing through the buildings' narrow corridors and former classrooms to get a glimpse of Cambodia's turbulent past.
Please note:
- The Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda are open from 08:00 to 10:30 and from 14:00 to 16:00, but may be closed at short notice for official ceremonies.
- All visitors must wear knee-length shorts and an elbow-length T-shirt or blouse, otherwise they will have to buy an appropriate sarong to cover themselves at the entrance.

Private excursion to the Island of Koh Dach
Cambodia has a long history of silk weaving dating back to pre-Angkorian times. Depart Phnom Penh and get the off-the-beaten-track in the village of Koh Dach, known as Silk Island, where the village artisans make their living weaving silk into a beautiful creation.
Climb aboard a local boat for a close-up view of the countryside and river life. Replace the boat with a bicycle for a relaxing ride over flat, easy terrain along the village's narrow lanes. The villagers' main occupations are growing crops such as maize, sesame, beans and bananas, and running small businesses. Meet some of the families who still preserve the traditional hand-weaving of silk and its brightly coloured dyeing. Be amazed by the handcrafted spinning wheels made from old bicycle parts.
Lined by views of rice paddies, vegetable gardens and orchards, Koh Dach takes you to a world of peace and tranquillity.

Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s lively capital boasts a mix of colonial buildings, grand temples, and a rich history, making it a great first stop on your trip to Cambodia. To explore the history of this city, once called the ‘Pearl of the East’, head to the Royal Palace of Cambodia, the royal residence of the king of Cambodia, or the National Museum.
If you’re craving a temple visit, discover Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple built in 1372 surrounded by picturesque gardens. Climb the grand staircase, crowned by lions and mythical creatures, and pay a visit to the shine of Daun Penh, the female founder of the temple. Elsewhere, the Killing Fields are a popular tourist draw in the nearby village of Choeung Ek. Though a harrowing experience, a walk through this mass grave of victims of the Khmer Rouge brings visitors closer to Cambodia’s more recent history.
End your days exploring the vibrant bars and restaurants of the city centre, encompassing grand hotel bars and local street food vendors, where you can get a true taste of the city with traditional Cambodian curries, pork and rice, and fresh seafood all on the menu.
Siem Reap
A bustling resort town in northwestern Cambodia, Siem Reap has been beckoning travellers for decades, in part thanks to its proximity to breathtaking Angkor, once the capital city of the Khmer Empire. However, crowds are still drawn to the city centre, which boasts a mix of French colonial and Chinese architecture, as well as lively restaurants, popular backpacking hotels, and local markets.
No trip to the city would be complete without exploring the ruins of Angkor, a historic city that thrived between the 9th and 15th centuries. Now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can wander among the decorative sandstone buildings, which number over one thousand! The most famous of all sights at Angkor is Angkor Wat, an immense temple and the largest religious monument in the world. If you can, catch a sunrise or sunset at the temple, before returning to Siem Reap to explore its street food scene - make sure to try the classic sour fish soup, and brace yourself for a sip of the traditional rice wine!
