The first stop for any Amsterdam visitor should be Dam Square, truly the heart of the inner city, which is dominated by the facade of the 17th-century Royal Palace. Elsewhere, check out the immense collection of art at the historic Rijksmuseum - including some iconic Rembrandts - or thought-provoking pieces at the ultra-modern Stedelijk Museum, both of which are housed on the Museumplein, a 30-minute walk from the city centre.
