Bordeaux —
As the unofficial wine capital of the world, Bordeaux is a haven for connoisseurs looking to sample the best of the region’s produce. However, this grand, historic city on the banks of the Garonne offers a lot more than merely a great glass of vino. In addition to boasting a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a historic centre, owing to its wonderful collection of historic architecture and monuments, the city is home to roughly 300,000 acres of vineyards.
The Bordeaux region creates an annual production of 960 million bottles of wine - visit the La Cité du Vin wine museum to explore exhibitions on wine culture and production, before retreating to one of the city’s wine bars to taste the good stuff. That intent on unearthing the wonders of French art should head to either the Musée des Beaux-Arts or the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in the city, before stopping at the Gothic Basilica of St. Michael to admire the view from the bell tower.
For an alternative look at the city, set off on a cruise along the Garonne, sailing past local vineyards and city sights such as the Place de la Bourse. To experience the slow Gironde life, take the short train journey to nearby St Emilion, another medieval UNESCO World Heritage town, that promises alluring streets and enough surrounding wineries to convert even the most ambivalent wine drinker!
