On arrival at Lihue Airport, collect your hire car and begin the drive through a landscape that feels untouched, where emerald mountains rise sharply above winding coastal roads. As you settle into your hotel, the pace slows considerably, replaced by the sound of wind through palms and distant ocean waves rolling in from the Pacific.

Suggestions:

  • Explore the coastline around Lihue and Wailua

DAYS 6-8: KAUAI

Spend the days exploring Kauai’s lush interior, where mist often lingers over emerald valleys and the air carries the scent of rainforest. Journey towards the island’s northern coastline, where Hanalei Bay unfolds in a perfect curve of golden sand backed by dramatic green mountains. On arrival in Kona, collect your hire car and begin the coastal drive, where lava fields stretch towards the ocean, and the horizon feels wider and more open. The shift in scenery is immediate, moving from Kauai’s lush valleys to the Big Island’s raw, elemental beauty, before settling into a relaxed evening by the Pacific.

  • Night at Royal Kona Resort 4*

DAYS 10-14: BIG ISLAND

Along the way, stop at scenic lookouts and coastal viewpoints shaped by centuries of volcanic activity. By evening, return to Kona beneath star-filled skies and the warm scent of the ocean carried on the trade winds.

By evening, settle into the relaxed atmosphere of Maui with the sound of the waves never far away.

  • Enjoy fresh seafood overlooking the Pacific
  • Watch the sunset with views towards Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi

DAYS 16-18: MAUI

On day 16, set out early by boat towards Molokini Crater, a crescent of volcanic rock rising from clear water. Beneath the surface, coral and fish move in dense, shifting colour. Continue to Turtle Arches, where sea turtles drift through lava formations. Lunch is taken on deck, with the coastline faint in the distance.

On the following days, explore at your own pace. Follow the winding road to Hana, where the journey matters more than the destination. The route curves through rainforest, past waterfalls and small roadside stands. Alternatively, rise early for the ascent of Haleakalā. At the summit, dawn spreads slowly across a vast volcanic crater, the colours muted and surreal. Back at sea level, the beaches offer warmth and stillness.

Your destination

Welcome to Hawaii

Hawaii is a captivating archipelago where volcanic landscapes, emerald valleys, and golden shores meet the rhythm of the Pacific. Fragrant tropical air, dramatic coastlines, and rich Polynesian heritage create an atmosphere that feels both serene and deeply alive, inviting discovery through nature, culture, and ocean-bound adventure.

Must-sees

  • Waikiki Beach, Oahu: Relax on iconic golden sands framed by Diamond Head’s silhouette and gentle waves rolling onto sun-warmed shores.
  • Haleakalā National Park, Maui: Witness sunrise above volcanic craters and sweeping clouds in a landscape shaped by fire and time.
  • Nā Pali Coast, Kauai: Admire towering emerald cliffs plunging into turquoise waters by boat, helicopter, or scenic coastal trails.
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island: Explore lava fields, steaming craters, and ever-changing volcanic scenery unlike anywhere else.
  • Road to Hana, Maui: Journey through waterfalls, rainforest curves, and hidden beaches along one of the islands’ most scenic drives.

Culinary culture

Hawaiian cuisine blends Polynesian roots with Asian and American influences. Savour poke bowls, fresh grilled seafood, tropical fruits, and slow-roasted kalua pork. Beachside cafés, refined island restaurants, and oceanfront terraces pair vibrant flavours with sunset views and warm sea breezes.

Dive deeper

Join traditional luaus celebrating music and dance, snorkel vibrant coral reefs, or explore local markets for handmade crafts and island produce. Evenings invite barefoot walks along the shore, stargazing beneath clear skies, or cocktails overlooking the Pacific’s shifting colours.

Good to know

The currency is the US dollar (USD). Distances between islands require flights, while car hire is ideal for exploring each destination independently. April to October offers warm, drier weather, while winter months bring lush landscapes, powerful surf, and migrating humpback whales.

San Francisco

San Francisco, a city of enduring charm and innovation, captivates visitors with its unique blend of cultural richness and stunning landscapes. From its Victorian-era architecture to the bustling atmosphere of its diverse neighbourhoods, this city promises an experience unlike any other. Be prepared for fluctuating weather; layering your attire is a must as fog often rolls in unexpectedly, even on sunny days.

Must-sees:

  • Pier 39, a vibrant waterfront spot to see sea lions basking and enjoy local shops.
  • Coit Tower, offering panoramic views of the city and its iconic landmarks.
  • Alcatraz Island, an infamous prison turned museum with a fascinating past, accessible by ferry.

Culinary culture:

San Francisco's food scene is as diverse as its population. The city is renowned for fresh seafood, including clam chowder served in sourdough bread bowls. Chinatown offers authentic dim sum, while Mission District taquerias serve some of the best tacos in the country. Don’t miss a visit to Ghirardelli Square, a historic site for sampling exquisite chocolate, a perfect souvenir.

Dive deeper:

To experience the city’s less-trodden paths, visit the Haight-Ashbury district, once the heart of the 1960s counterculture movement. Explore Dolores Park, a green haven with breathtaking views of the skyline, or wander through Chinatown, an enclave of unique architecture and lively streets. The Painted Ladies, an iconic row of Victorian homes, offer a glimpse into the city’s historic elegance.

Good to know:

The local currency is the US dollar, and most places accept cards, though cash may be useful in smaller establishments. San Francisco’s weather can be unpredictable year-round, with summer often cooler due to fog. Public transport, including buses and cable cars, is reliable, though walking allows you to fully appreciate the city’s distinctive charm.

Tipping Guide: USA & Canada

  • Restaurants (table service): Tip around 18% of the bill before tax. 20% is common for excellent service in major cities.
  • Bars / cocktails: Tip around 18% of the drink total, rather than a flat $1–2.
  • Hotel porter / bell staff: Tip $2–5 per bag when your luggage is delivered. Optional for short stays.
  • Valet parking: Tip $2–5 when your car is returned, not when dropping it off.
  • Private driver (full day): Tip $10–20 per couple per day; increase for exceptional service.
  • Group tour guide: Tip $5–10 per person per day, standard for organised excursions.
  • Private guide: Tip $15–25 per person per day for personalised, one-on-one experiences.

Additional tips:

  • Tipping is customary in the US and Canada; it’s an expected part of service wages.
  • Always tip on the pre-tax amount.
  • Cash is preferred in smaller towns; cards are widely accepted in cities.
  • When in doubt, rounding up a few dollars is always appreciated.

Driving & Road Etiquette: USA & Canada

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road; steering wheel is on the left. Most rental cars are automatic.
  • Speed limits: Displayed in mph in the USA and km/h in Canada.
  • Parking: Always read street signs carefully. Fire hydrants, bus stops, and disabled bays are strictly enforced. Parking meters and apps are common in cities.
  • Fuel (petrol/gas):
    • Pay before pumping at many US stations.
    • Prices are per gallon in the US and per litre in Canada.
  • Distances: North American roads are long. Allow extra travel time and plan for rest stops, especially on highways or in national parks.
  • Navigation: Offline maps or GPS are highly recommended, particularly in rural or mountainous areas with limited signal.

Additional tips:

  • Familiarise yourself with automatic cars if you usually drive a manual.
  • Be extra cautious in residential areas; speed limits are strictly enforced.
  • Watch out for school buses: in the US, traffic must stop in both directions when lights flash.
  • Keep cash or a card handy for toll roads; many accept electronic payment.
