Optional Full Day Funzi Kinazini Excursion
Join us for an unforgettable day in one of the last ecologically intact paradises on Earth, sailing on a traditional dhow!
You’ll be picked up from your hotel early in the morning and then driven to the base camp in Bodo, an ancient fishing village located one hour south of Mombasa.
After enjoying a light Swahili breakfast, you’ll board the dhow to sail towards Funzi island; where you’ll get a glimpse into the everyday life of a Shirazi Swahili Village, unaffected by time for the past 100 years. Embark in a canoe trip up the Ramisi river, and explore the dense mangroves of this unique ecosystem. You’ll delight while observing from a safe distance a large variety of birdlife, perhaps a giant lizard or even a striking crocodile!
Sailing continues towards a secluded sandbank on the majestic Indian Ocean, where you’ll be able to relax or choose to swim and explore the surroundings. En route on the dhow to a private island restaurant, on the uninhabited Kinazini. You might delight in the sights of dolphins or giant sea turtles along your journey. Indulge in a sumptuous Robinson Crusoe- style barbeque lunch, featuring seasonal seafood, such as fresh crab and lobster. Unwind after lunch with a siesta, or go for a swim to explore the island; before sailing back to Bodo to catch the transfer back to the hotel, just in time for dinner.
The optional sea safari operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. For your comfort please bring water shoes, swimsuits, and sun lotion. Water and soft drinks are included onboard and in the restaurant; however, be advised that no alcohol is served on this tour.
Optional Pili Pipa Dhow Safari Excursion
Sail on the Pili Pipa Dhow towards two snorkeling sites to marvel at the underwater spectacle this marine safari will provide!
Departing from your hotel, meet at Shimoni Pier. A welcome tea, coffee, and biscuits will await you; followed by a briefing on the Pili Pipa Dhow and a journey to the Kisite Coral Gardens. Snorkeling equipment and life jackets will be provided to you.
Marine guides will accompany you along the flamboyant coral reef, pointing out sights of interest. You might be lucky enough to see magnificent dolphins, turtles, stingrays, and even eels! After your swim, chilled sodas and fresh fruit will revitalize you. You’ll then return to a private house on Wasini Island for a delicious Swahili seafood banquet. Delicious vegetarian meals, as well as chicken alternatives, are available upon request. Lunch will be served by locals in the forest garden dining room. Afterwards, you can relax in the Day Dreamer Lounge with a selection of fresh pastries, fruits, coffee, and teas; while reading through some marine literature or admiring the breathtaking ocean view.
Be advised that sailing will take place depending on weather conditions and smaller groups will be privileged to minimize the negative impact on the reefs.
