Your Itinerary

Amman Region

Half day of tasting traditional Middle Eastern cuisine

After breakfast, explore downtown Amman on foot. Stop at the bakery near the Bayader bus station to try two traditional deserts, Asabea Zainab (Zainab's Fingers) and Ammaweh.

Walk to Hussini Mosque, and continue on towards the vegetable market. Lunch will be served in traditional restaurant Hashem restaurant, one of the best in the capital that serves excellent falafel. The next stop is Habiba, for another Middle Eastern dessert called Kunafa. Stroll along to the Roman theatre while drinking a fresh juice, before returning to the hotel.

Amman, Desert Castles

After breakfast, set off for the Desert Castles. Stop for lunch. The first castle on the list is Qasr Al-Kharaneh, located 55 km from Amman. Its architecture suggests that it was built for a military purpose, but other researchers think the importance of the stables means it was a roadside inn, or 'caravanserai.'

Qasr Amra is located 26 km southwest of Azraq, by the main road. Qasr Amra occupies an island which formed in the bed of a 'wadi' (a valley or ravine that's dry except in the rainy season). This small, well-preserved castle has clear lines and rounded contours, whose blonde stone blends in with the heat of the desert. Qasr Amra was built at the beginning of the eighth century by Caliph Walid I, a great lover of hunting and poetry.

Qasr Al Azraq was severely affected by an earthquake in 1927, yet the castle retains all its splendour. Thanks to an inscription above the main entrance, researchers believe the castle dates back to the thirteenth century, when the mosuque in the courtyard is likely to have been built.

Return to Amman for a visit to the capital of the Hashemite kingdom. Between the eastern desert and the Jordan Valley, Amman is home to a million inhabitants. Entirely built in a white-beige limestone, the city is an aggregate of cream-coloured cubes, bronzed into golden shades by the sun.

Superb views of the town can be seen from the top of the citadel. But before going down there, a visit to the Archaeological Museum, the temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace is a must. Take a short tour around the beautiful Greco-Roman Theatre, which can accommodate around six thousand spectators. Return to the hotel.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Jerash, Ajloun

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Jerash.
In the morning, leave for the ancient city of Jerash or Gerasa, approximately 45km from Amman. It is the second-largest site in Jordan after Petra. Today, it's considered one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the Near East, as it was hidden under the sand for several centuries before being discovered.

The city was entirely built in a pinkish orange limestone. Viewed at dawn and sunset, the stone is illuminated by the rays of the sun in a breathtaking display. The heyday of Gerasa dates from the second and thrid centuries. Jerash is the epitome of extensive and formal Roman municipal planning throughout the Middle East.

Wander the cobbled streets, lined with colonnades, immense temples on the crest of hills, charming theatres, spacious public squares, thermal baths and fountains. After lunch, continue to Ajloun.

This city has a very impressive fortress (Qalaat al Rabad), nestled at the top of a mountain, which was built in the twelfth century at the time of Saladin. It was constructed to help its leaders defend the region, control the iron mines and to prevent the Crusaders from crossing into Jerusalem. Admire incredible views over the Jordan valley from the top. Return to Amman. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

King's Highway

King's Highway, Madaba, Nébo, Kerak, Petra

After breakfast at the hotel, leave for the King's Highway to visit Madaba. The city of mosaics adorning everything from mosaics to churches, along with the quality of the pieces, proves that this area was home to an extraordinary school of mosaic craftsmen.

Their art reached its peak in the fifth and sixth centuries. Visit St. George's Church in Madaba, where the 'map of Palestine' was unearthed in 1898 during the construction of the church. This mosaic from the middle of the sixth century, barely altered, traces the geography of the Byzantine Near East. It initially measured 25m by 5m, and was composed of two million tesserae.

Next, head to Mount Nebo, 10 km northwest of Madaba, believed to be the site of the tomb of Moses. Mount Nebo rises to 840m above sea level, and has been a place of universal pilgrimage since the beginning of the Christian era.

Continue to Kerak Castle, Wadi Kérak, in a valley below the city which was one of the msot well-known routes into Palestine. Lunch in Kerak. Continue to Petra via the desert road. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Petra, Wadi Rum

Petra the 'Rose City', Wadi Rum

Breakfast at the hotel before leaving for a full day tour of Petra. Lunch. The pink city 'Petra', 'the stone' in Greek, derives from the Aramaic toponym 'RQM, pronounced 'Rekem' or "Rakmou", which means 'two-coloured'.

Geology is at the origin of the red city, entirely carved in a soft sandstone. People, present here for ten thousand years, finished building the city between the third century BC and the second century AD. In total, there are nearly 800 monuments, especially tombs, which dot Petra over 100 km2. The eighth wonder of the world, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it's the most famous site in Jordan and even in the Middle East.

Cross the Siq, a narrow and long fault due to a prehistoric earthquake. At the end of the Siq is the most majestic monument of Petra, "Al Khazneh" or the "Treasury" with Greco-Roman decoration.

Beyond the Treasury, there are hundreds of sculpted buildings, temples, royal tombs, houses, burial chambers, party rooms, baths, monumental staircases, arched wooden doors and cobbled streets. The highlight is the Roman Theatre with around 3000 seats. Cross Le Cardo Romain and visit the Qasr El Bint, the only temple still standing, and in a good state of conservation.

Lunch at the onsite restaurant. In the afternoon, climb Mount El Deir or the monastery (optional). Just a 2-hour drive south of Petra, enjoy a unique experience in the most magnificent place in the world, Wadi Rum. It's one of the most beautiful deserts in the world, filled with magnificent mountains of pink sandstone, canyons and dunes.

Spending a night in Wadi Rum is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Rediscover the joy of sleeping under the stars and tasting food that reflects true Bedouin bounty and local hospitality. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Wadi Rum

Breakfast, Wadi Rum. The desert of Wadi Rum. If Petra is the result of the work of man combined with that of nature, the cliffs, peaks and valleys of Wadi Rum owe their “serene beauty” and their “overwhelming grandeur” to nature itself, in the words of T.E. Lawrence. Wadi Rum "vast, resonating with echoes and marked by the presence of the divine" is such that "[only] landscapes, in childhood dreams, have this grandeur and this silence".

This desolate site was one of the shrines in the Great Arab Revolt, centred on by director David Lean in one of the most impressive scenes in 'Lawrence of Arabia.' “Local” 4X4 pick-up tour in the desert for about an hour and a half.

Iraq El Amir, Dead Sea

Amman, Iraq El Amir, Dead Sea, Amman

Breakfast at the hotel and leave west from Amman to Iraq El Amir and its Hellenistic era castle, Qasr El Abed (second century BC). Astonishing in its construction, it contains Greek and Arabic influences, with the appearance of a Roman palace.

Follow the road to the Dead Sea for a swim and an unforgettable experience, followed by lunch. Its particular climate makes it an exceptional holiday destination. The Dead Sea has been known by many names, among them the Greeks called it the 'Asphaltite Lake' and the Hebrews the “Sea of Salt”. 75 km long and 15 km wide, the Dead Sea covers an area of 920 km2, almost twice that of Lake Geneva. The maximum depth of the Dead Sea is 399 m. The lower level of the Jordan depression is therefore 410m below sea level and as such, it represents the lowest point on the globe.

Return to Amman. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Welcome to Jordan

Jordan

Full to the brim with epic scenery, ancient history, captivating cities and bucketlist attractions, Jordan is a popular tourist destination that offers its guests a true immersion into the charms of the Middle East.

While Jordan offers a variety of spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites, none are more beloved than Petra, a fascinating archaeological city that sits within a mountain gorge and features beautiful 'rose-tinted' stone. Frequently referred to as one of the seven new Wonders of the World, this architectural masterpiece is a must-stop spot on any tourist's itinerary in Jordan.

For those hoping to escape the arid climate of the desert, we recommend taking advantage of Jordan's coastline with a visit to the Dead Sea. Thanks to the incredibly high salt quantities in the water, here, you can float atop the waves, make the most of the natural minerals and their healing properties and enjoy a well deserved rest, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life!
