Your Itinerary In Detail —
Day 1 to 4: San José & Tortuguero
Welcome to Costa Rica! A local representative will greet and assist you at the Airport. Then, take a private transfer from Juan Santamaria International Airport to your hotel in San José (Holiday Inn Escazu - Standard Hotel or Real Intercontinental - Superior Hotel). Check-in, get comfortable in your hotel room and relax!
You will check-out early from your hotel in San José. At the agreed time, meet at the hotel reception for a semi-collective transfer to the wonderful area of Tortuguero in the North Caribbean. Tortuguero is one of Costa Rica's most popular eco-tourism destinations; it was created in 1970 to protect endangered nesting sea turtles. The canals, rivers and lagoons of Tortuguero National Park are a study of rainforest, freshwater and marine biology. Tortuguero National Park is a place unlike any other, a paradise for research and ecotourism.
On route, stop in the city of Guápiles to have a Costa Rican breakfast in a local restaurant and then continue to the pier where you will board a boat to Tortuguero. This boat transfer will be a lovely introduction to the heart of the rainforest. While travelling on the canals, you will admire the natural landscapes showcasing different shades of green.
Arrive at either the Laguna Lodge (Standard Hotel) or the Pachira Lodge (Superior Hotel), check-in, get comfortable in your room, and enjoy a tasteful lunch. In the afternoon, meet your Guide for a tour through the Tortuguero Lagoon. You will have the chance to feel immersed in nature while admiring the vast vegetation and possibly spotting the wildlife. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure to relax and use the hotel facilities.
One of the most amazing natural spectacles that happen in Tortuguero is the arrival of the Sea Turtles, which find a haven in Tortuguero beaches. The Green Sea Turtle comes and lays eggs, which then later hatch and hundreds of thousands of small sea turtles leave their nests to go into the ocean and continue the cycle. The best time to observe nesting turtles is from mid-July through mid-October. This is when the more abundant green sea turtles nest on the beaches. Nesting occurs at night and observation requires going with a licensed guide. If you travel to Tortuguero during this time, you can take an optional guided tour direct from the hotel.
Breakfast is included at your hotel. After breakfast, be ready to explore the Tortuguero National Park, discover its incredible and beautiful network of canals, lagoons and dense rainforest through a boat tour guided by an expert of the region's nature. Filled with stunning biodiversity, there is abundant wildlife in Tortuguero, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds that you will have the chance to see. 60 species of mammals inhabit the park such as spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, jaguar, pumas, ocelots, sloths, river otters, and manatees. Over 300 species of birds can be observed within the park including various species of parrots, parakeets, kingfishers, toucans, spoonbills, and more. There are 111 species of reptiles within the park including green sea turtles, leatherback sea turtles, caiman, crocodiles, and boa constrictors. Of the 57 amphibian species, red-eyed leaf frogs are the most popular. After exploring the beauty of the national park, return to the hotel.
During the afternoon, join a guided nature walk through the private tropical trails of the hotels. Your guide will search for local species such as reptiles, birds, and some mammals; monkeys are abundant in this region. Learn more about the dense vegetation while you fall in love with the wild environment. *The order of the activities in Tortuguero may vary depending on the hotel.
Wake up to a delicious included breakfast and then, check-out of the hotel. Afterwards, continue your trip to the next lovely destination! A shared transfer by boat will take you from Tortuguero to a restaurant located in Guápiles, where you will enjoy a traditional lunch. At the restaurant, meet the Car Rental Representative to get your vehicle and all the necessary information.
Your road trip adventure begins! Self-drive to La Fortuna de San Carlos, home of the wonderful Arenal Volcano. Prior to December 2010, the Arenal Volcano was one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world and it was a truly majestic sight, as it spewed molten rocks and ash from its summit daily. Today there are no lava eruptions, for now, but you can still see smoke and ash spew out of the top of the volcano. Upon arrival, get comfortable in your hotel room at either Arenal Manoa (Standard Hotel) or Tabacon Resort & Spa (Superior Hotel) and enjoy leisure time to relax at the hotel facilities.
Day 5 to 6: Arenal
Breakfast is included at the hotel. Today you will have plenty of time to relax and explore the wonders of Arenal on your own. If you are a nature and adventure lover, the Arenal region offers numerous options of activities and places to discover. Enjoy some of the natural hot springs (thanks to the geothermal activity of the volcano), immerse yourself in the rainforest and experience ultra-relaxation, privacy and tranquillity. If you are craving adventure, take a hike to the lava trails at the Arenal Volcano National Park; uncover the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall, experience a good dose of adrenaline in the Balsa River rapids while admiring beautiful vegetation! Fly over the treetop canopy on a Zipline adventure and much more - optional excursions which you can add at the next stage of the booking process. Costa Rica is known worldwide as a top adventure destination and La Fortuna area is famous for the best outdoor adventures.
Delight in a sumptuous breakfast at your hotel and then, check-out. Continue your self-driven trip to Bijagua, most famous for being the gateway to the Rio Celeste Waterfall and Tenorio National Park. There is so much to do here, your days will be filled with adventure and sightseeing! The region has areas of thick jungle and is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. The virgin rainforest is home to tropical animal species like pumas, tapirs, sloths, anteaters, coatis, giant butterflies and rare plant species, like wild orchids. Bijagua is covered in acres of pastoral farmland with citrus groves and vegetable gardens. It is also a birdwatcher's paradise - the forests here provide critical habitat to squawking green parrots, macaws, hummingbirds and toucans.
Get comfortable in your hotel room at either Celeste Mountain Lodge (Standard Hotel) or Rio Celeste Highway (Superior Hotel). Take advantage of your free time to explore the hotel's private trails, at your own pace. Listen to the sounds of nature, the singing birds and marvel at the tropical beauty of the vegetation that surrounds you.
Day 7 to 8: Bijagua
Breakfast is included at the Hotel. You will have time to explore the area at your own leisure. Without a doubt, taking a hike to discover the turquoise waters of Rio Celeste, the heavenly river, is highly recommended during your stay. The Río Celeste gets its name from the unusual colour of the water. The deep turquoise hue is due to a phenomenon known as Mie scattering. Briefly, when the Buena Vista River with its aluminium and silicon particles meets the Sour Creek, with its acidic waters, the resulting combination causes the suspended particles in the Río Celeste to scatter light, creating the turquoise colour.
As it winds its way through the Tenorio Volcano National Park, the river path includes a waterfall, Laguna Azul, a suspended bridge, and the Borbollones, a section of the river bubbling with hot springs. The trail is 6 kilometres long round-trip and is not particularly strenuous. You should plan on about three hours to complete it. Depending upon the time of year, however, it can become very muddy, so be prepared!
You will have breakfast in the morning and then, check-out. At the agreed time, self-drive to your next destination - the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area, one of the most beautiful countryside and ecologically diverse locations in the Province of Guanacaste. At over 34,000 acres, this region has 2 volcanoes, 32 rivers and streams, and an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Rincón de la Vieja hosts a wide variety of tropical forests, including dwarf cloud and montane ecosystems. Exotic and rare flora and fauna find refuge here including kinkajous, pumas, a variety of monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and jaguars. Rare emerald toucans and blue-crowned motmots glow in the sunlight along with vibrant orchids.
Rincón de la Vieja is approximately 24 kilometres northeast of the city of Liberia, which is the capital of the Guanacaste Province. Upon arrival at the hotel Hacienda Guachipelin, enjoy leisure time to relax.
Day 9 to 11: Rincon de la Vieja
Day 9 & 10
Breakfast is included at the hotel. During your stay, you can either explore the Rincon de la Vieja National Park on your own or enjoy free access to the following attractions:
- Río Negro Hot springs & Mud Baths: Experience the incredible hot springs at Rio Negro. Beautiful and relaxing, the volcanic hot springs bubble up in the Rio Negro (“Black River”), heated naturally by the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Surrounded by thick forest, the clear river flows through 10 manufactured pools, created to capture the steaming mineral-rich water. You have access to the pools (of varying temperatures) on both sides of the river by two hanging bridges. Heated volcanic clay is available to smooth all over like a “spa body masque.” After it dries, wash it off with a cool shower or jump in the river before soaking the hot pools again. It is complete relaxation and pure bliss!
Self-Guide visit to stunning waterfalls:
- Oropendola Waterfall: This secluded waterfall is a short walk from the National Park’s entrance on a trail with varying terrain. The trek descends down to a gorgeous canyon where you will be surrounded by rock wall towers covered in green. An incredible hanging bridge crosses the Rio Blanco canyon, leading you to a platform that allows enjoyment of this natural wonder. Oropendola Waterfall plunges an impressive 25 metres to a sparkling turquoise pool within the lush canyon of the Rio Blanco. Oropendola Waterfall is a truly picturesque tropical oasis.
- Las Chorreras Waterfall: Las Chorreras Waterfalls canyon is a beautiful place to relax in pristine nature. This stunning location is easily accessible. When you reach the clearing and hear the power of the waterfall, a stairway will welcome you to enjoy a swim in the tropical waterfall pool. Two side-by-side waterfalls cascade into a sky-blue mineral water pool filled with rejuvenating properties. A tiny, shallow canyon of volcanic rock rings the waterfalls and pool, creating an intimate and private oasis for a sublime swimming experience.
- La Victoria Waterfall: With a dramatic drop of 35 metres, the stunning Victoria Waterfall descends into the Río Negro at Hacienda Guachipelin. The surrounding canyon hosts unique vegetation and the topography is remarkable for drone footage. At the base of the waterfall, you can swim in the crystal-clear pool.
Breakfast is included at the hotel in the morning and then, check-out. Continue your road trip to Tamarindo beach, located on the North Pacific Coast. Tamarindo is the most developed beach on the vibrant Nicoya Peninsula and one of Costa Rica's best-known surf spots.
