7-Night Itinerary - Day 1-3: San José - Tortuguero

Day 1: UK - San Jose (Airport - San Jose - 45 minutes)

Welcome to Costa Rica! Meet your representative at the airport. Then transfer to your hotel located in downtown San José, the capital city. Receive your documentation of travel and accommodation at your hotel.

 

Day 2: San Jose - Tortuguero (4 hours plus 1.5 hour boat)

Meet at your reception for a semi-collective transfer to the Tortuguero pier. Arrival to Guápiles city and breakfast in a local restaurant, before taking a boat to Tortuguero to travelling on the canals, in the heart of the rainforest. Installation at the lodge, and lunch on site. In the afternoon, ride a boat to the small Caribbean village of Tortuguero to visit it, before heading to the lodge. The afternoon is free to enjoy the facilities of the lodge and to walk around. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

 

Day 3: Tortuguero - Arenal (1.5 hour boat plus 3 hours drive)

Early morning, take a boat trip to visit the canals of Tortuguero Park: it is a different and very fun way to discover this imposing panorama. (The entrance to the national park is not included: $15.00 per person). Enjoy breakfast at the lodge. Return to Guápiles by boat, and then have lunch in a local restaurant. Transfer to the agency to meet the agent and get your rental car. Continue to the north of the country to reach La Fortuna, a town at the foot of the Arenal volcano.
Check-in and overnight at the hotel.

Day 4-5: Arenal - Monteverde

Day 4: Arenal 

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Early in the morning, you will enjoy a visit to the hanging bridges of Mistico Park. You will walk for at least 2 hours and pass for more than five suspension bridges accompanied by a guide specialized in the nature of Costa Rica and while keeping an eye on the different animals, which populate this forest. The rest of the day free to enjoy the hotel or to carry out additional activities in the area. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Arenal - Monteverde (4 hours drive)

Breakfast at the hotel before you continue to the Monteverde area, between the central valley and the Guanacaste. There is one of the largest natural biological reserves in the middle of the cloud forest. It protects from various amphibians unique in the world, more than 400 species of birds including the mythical resplendent Quetzal, many species of butterflies and 2500 varieties of plants. Check-in and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6-8: Monteverde - Manuel Antonio - San Jose

Day 6: Monteverde - Manuel Antonio (3 hours drive)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to the central Pacific in Manuel Antonio where is the smallest national park of Costa Rica but one of the most famous. Manuel Antonio National Park is visited for domestic and foreign tourists, thanks to its easy access and the diversity of ecosystems. Check-in and overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 7: Manuel Antonio

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before a free day to enjoy the hotel, the beach or to explore the region. Overnight at the hotel.

 

Our suggestions for visits:

- Manuel Antonio National Park (not open on Mondays)

- Boat trip on the Tárcoles River

- Catamaran tour

 

Day 8: Manuel Antonio - San Jose (3 hours drive)

Breakfast at the hotel. Return to the city of San José to collect the rented car at the rental car agency, National Rent a Car, near Juan Santamaría International Airport. You will reach it with a free semi-collective shuttle.

10-Night Itinerary

Day 1-2 of this tour are the same as the above itinerary. 

 

Day 3: Tortuguero

Breakfast at the lodge. Boat trip to visit the canals of Tortuguero Park: it is a different and very fun way to discover this imposing panorama. (The entrance to the national park is not included: $ 15.00 per person). Later, you will be able to visit the surroundings of the Lodge accompanied by the local guide to discover this very humid tropical forest, its fauna and its flora. Back to the Lodge for lunch.
You have the rest of the day free to enjoy the lodge's facilities and on-site activities. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

 

Day 4: Tortuguero – Arenal (1.5 hours in boat and 3 hours on route) 

Breakfast at the lodge. Return to Guápiles by boat, and then have lunch in a local restaurant. Transfer to the agency to meet the agent and give you your rental car. Continuation to the north of the country to reach La Fortuna, a town at the foot of the Arenal volcano. Check-in and overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 5 is the same as day 4 and day 6 is the same as day 5 of the 7-night itinerary.

 

Day 7: Monteverde

Breakfast at the hotel. Free day to enjoy the hotel or make an optional excursion in the region. Overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 8 is the same as day 6 on the 7-night itinerary. Days 9 and 10 are the same as day 7 (where you have free days in Manuel Antonio). Day 11 is the same as day 8 on the 7-night itinerary.

12-Night Itinerary

This itinerary is mostly the same as the 10-night itinerary however guests will have an extra day at leisure in Arenal (Day 6) and an extra free day in Manuel Antonio (Day 12).

Throughout the Essentials of Costa Rica Fly Drive tour, you will enjoy a meal plan according to the program including all breakfasts, full board (excluding drinks) in Tortuguero from breakfast of day 2 to lunch of day 3 (7-night) or day 4 (10 or 12-night).

The flights included are with either a scheduled or no-frills airline and are subject to live availability and prices can change. You can choose your preferred departure times during the booking process. Please select your flight options carefully as departure and arrival airports may differ. 

Transfers:

Return shared transfers are included for flight-inclusive offers.
 
 
For inbound transfer arrangements please confirm with your transfer provider when you arrive. Alternatively, please check with the reception of your accommodation. If you still require assistance, please call the transfer provider directly.

Car Hire:

For the freedom to explore your destination at your own pace, make the most of included car hire with your booking (flight inclusive offers only)

 

Please note you cannot be guaranteed a specific make of car within a certain group. The lead name on the booking will be confirmed as the named driver. The named driver must present a credit card in their name when collecting the car (credit cards in other names will not be accepted). The named driver must also present a full valid driving licence on the collection of the vehicle and in some cases, a credit card or cash deposit will be required. Please ensure that you check your car hire documents carefully once received as this will advise if there are any taxes/charges to be paid locally as well as potential mileage restrictions. Other fees may be applicable in addition to the cost of your car rental for any additional products added to your car rental.

Entry Requirements 


You must ensure you have a valid passport to travel on. 


If your passport describes you as a British Citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica. For non-British citizens, you should check the Costa Rica embassy website.

If you choose a flight which routes via the USA and are travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), you must obtain an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) prior to departure. Passengers who have not received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel will be denied boarding. Please note that if you are denied from boarding, or are not allowed into the US for any reason, you will still be subject to our cancellation charges in accordance with our terms and conditions. 


Evidence of onward travel


Entry to Costa Rica may be refused if you are unable to produce evidence of return or onward travel (for example a return air ticket).


Airport tax


There’s a departure tax of $29 when leaving the country by air. Most airlines include this in ticket prices; a few have still not done so. Check with your airline or travel company whether you need to pay this separately.


Health

There are increased levels of dengue cases in 2019. Please be sure to check all health advice on the following link before travelling, paying particular attention to the 'Other Risks' section. This advice is subject to change. 

If vaccinations or other preventive measures are required, you will need to visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip. 


UK health authorities have classified Costa Rica as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. For more information and advice, visit the website of the National Travel Health Network and Centre website.


Cases of Chikungunya virus have been confirmed in Costa Rica and the number of reported cases in the region is increasing. You should take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.


Please note that passport, visa and health requirements can change. It is every traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport, any required visas, and all the necessary vaccinations/health requirements as well as adequate insurance.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Please note: Due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the UK Government is currently requesting that all travellers returning to the UK, (with exceptions), must provide their journey and contact details up to 48 hours before arrival, and self-isolate at home for 14 days. These restrictions will be reviewed every three weeks. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel, and this advice is also being kept under constant review.

Please note that a travel insurance covering health costs in the event of coronavirus infection is mandatory.
