Costa Rica

As the eco-and adventure-tourism capital of Central America, Costa Rica is a magnet for nature enthusiasts, thrill seekers and those who want to step off the beaten track. La Pura Vida (the pure life) is the unofficial motto of the country, and it's easy to see why - emerald rainforests, pastel-coloured hummingbirds, smouldering volcanic peaks, tumbling rivers...this verdant chunk is one of the most bio-diverse spots on the planet!

The country's national parks are its greatest glory, with one-third of the country set aside as protected natural areas. As well as being a world leader in eco-tourism, Costa Rica superbly caters for visitors looking for an adrenalin kick, with options including whitewater rafting, zip line tours through the rainforest canopy, surfing and quad biking. It is quickly becoming more popular, so grab this chance to visit now, while landscapes are still exceptionally unspoiled!

When driving or parking your car, lock the doors and keep the windows closed.

When possible, try to park in car parks, never on the street.

Never leave money, credit cards, bags or valuables in the car.

If you have a flat tyre, if someone tells you there is a problem with your car, if you are pushed from behind or followed, do not stop. Get help from the police or go to a busy shopping centre.

Avoid stopping when a stranger asks for a ride.

If you need to consult a map, do so in a safe, public place or ask a police officer for directions. Do not stop in front of strangers.

Police tickets should be paid at banks, never directly to police officers.

NATIONAL PROTECTION PACKAGE (NPP):

The National Protection Package (NPP) is a comprehensive product that includes Loss and Damage and Theft Protection (LDW-TP), Third Party Liability (SLI), Zero Deductible and Window and Tire (W&T) insurance, at a reduced price.

DAMAGE WAIVER (LDW):

Renting a vehicle from National Car Rental means that you are responsible for returning it in the same condition as you received it. LDW is not coverage, but it does relieve you of any obligation to pay for theft, vandalism, collision and damage to the exterior of the vehicle, regardless of who is responsible, as long as you meet the terms and conditions set forth in the rental agreement.

Once the LDW is accepted, the renter will only be responsible for the first $800 to $1,500 of the total damage costs (depending on the type of vehicle).

Renters may decline LDW if the credit card they are paying with was issued in the United States or Canada, provides coverage and can be verified by a National Car Rental employee in Costa Rica. There may be some types of vehicles for which LDW is mandatory. If LDW is declined, the renter will be held responsible for all damages and the SLI policy will be mandatory. This cover does not include roadside assistance required due to the customer's negligence or assistance in the event of lost keys, punctures etc.

SUPPLEMENTARY LIABILITY COVER (SLC) - additional cost:

This insurance policy releases you from any liability to third parties. If you are involved in an accident while driving a rental car and damage is caused to third-party property, SLI will cover up to ¢10,000,000.00 of damage to third-party property.

National Car Rental guarantees that all policyholders or insured parties under this insurance policy will be covered.

This policy covers up to ¢40 million PER PERSON and up to ¢100 million PER ACCIDENT in which the rental vehicle is involved. This policy covers "all sums for which the insured, or any other party covered by this policy, is held liable by a final judgment, in connection with this accident and any personal injury or property damage caused thereby. This cover excludes the driver and any member of his family, any person residing in the driver's household, or any member of the driver's family.

Under this insurance policy, the hirer will be responsible for 20% of all damages, which in no case shall be less than USD 250.

This coverage becomes mandatory when the LDW is declined.

0.00 DEDUCTIBLE:

When you rent a vehicle from National Car Rental and accept any of our coverages, you become responsible for a specific deductible amount for each coverage.

The $0.00 deductible option allows you to reduce your payment obligations under any of the previously accepted coverages, provided you agree to the terms of the rental agreement with respect to the deductibles of the accepted insurance policies.

Damage caused by driving on sand, in water or under the influence of alcohol - as specified in the rental agreement - is not covered. If you decline this option, you will be responsible for paying the deductibles of the accepted coverage as stated in the rental agreement.

GLASS AND TYRE (W&T):

With this cover, National Car Rental releases you from any obligation to pay for any tyre/windscreen damage caused by accidents, collisions, bad road conditions (does not cover theft).

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE:

National Car Rental provides reasonably priced locksmith, tow truck and battery charging services, as well as delivery of up to 3 gallons of fuel, for your rental vehicle.

Coverage does not apply in the event of negligence.
