The highland games show the Scots in full flow and you might be lucky enough to see one of these events in action, where the locals come out resplendent in their traditional kilts and compete in events like hammer throws and caber tossing, as well as showing their prowess with the axe!
Your Itinerary —
Arrive at Edinburgh Airport. Take the time to stroll into the Royal Mile which is the main thoroughfare of Old Town Edinburgh, with famous historical sites and buildings, as well as an impressive array of shops, eateries and pubs. You can also visit Edinburgh Castle which has highlighted the city’s skyline for 800 years. Take some time to visit the Museum of Scotland to discover the story of Scotland and its people!
Overnight at Melville Castle 4*, Edinburgh or similar
Today, in the morning visit Calton Hill. Marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Calton Hill has some of the city's best views and if you get up early, the best sunrises. You can also enjoy the Camera Obscura Museum! In the afternoon visit Holyrood Palace, Royal residence in Scotland or the stunning Royal Yacht Britannia!
Overnight at Melville Castle 4*, Edinburgh or similar
Today head north to Aberdeen. On your way you can stop in St. Andrews and visit Scotland’s oldest university town, founded in 1410. The town of St. Andrews is small--only three main streets and an open, airy feel with long stretches of sandy beach on either side of town.
Overnight at Summerhill hotel 3*, Station House Hotel 3*, Loch Kinord hotel 3* or similar in Aberdeen
Today leave Aberdeen and travel to Inverness. On your way you can explore Cairngorms National Park. Twice the size of the Lake District, the Cairngorms National Park has more mountains, forest paths, rivers, lochs, wildlife hotspots, friendly villages and distilleries than you can possibly imagine. You might just have time to fit in a reviving dram of single malt whisky at the Glenlivet Distillery at Tomintoul, part of the world renowned Malt Whisky Trail.

After good nights sleep, visit the famous Loch Ness! Don’t miss Urquhart Castle which offers a taste of the Highlands at their most dramatic. Another interesting place to stop is Fort Augustus. It takes its name from the fort built in this location, after the defeat of the 1715 Jacobite uprising.

It's the town that's known as 'the Outdoor Capital of Scotland', so you can rightly expect there are a few thrilling activities to enjoy in the open air. Located in the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber region, you can face the challenge of climbing up Ben Nevis's ascent to reach the summit. Alternatively you can visit Glenfinnan Monument, at the head of Loch Shiel. It was erected, in 1815, in tribute to the Jacobite clansmen who fought and died in the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

Today leave Fort William, you first stop will be Glencoe - one of Scotland's most spectacular places. The road through Glen Coe takes you through the heart of an ancient volcano. Follow the Glen Coe Geotrail to find out more about how glaciers and fiery explosions carved out the glen's rugged mountain peaks. Continue through loch Lomond & The Trossachs - Scotland’s first National Park.
Continue to Edinburgh area for your last overnight at Melville Castle 4* or similar in Edinburgh
Day 8. Departure
Return to Edinburgh Airport 2 hours prior to your flight's scheduled departure. This will allow ample time to check in for your flight home. Edinburgh is a small airport, but offers a surprisingly large array of shops and restaurants. If you have some time on your hands after check-in and security, you won't be bored!
