Your Destinations —
The harbour is the ideal place for a seafront promenade, bustling with fishing boats, gulets and international yachts, whilst the town exudes charm, with some excellent restaurants and a market where locals gather to sell their wares - it is the biggest in the area and the perfect place to hunt for bargains, hone your bartering skills and stock up on holiday souvenirs.
A small island lies a short distance off the coast on which you will find the remains of a sizeable Byzantine settlement and although many of the buildings are in ruins, there is still plenty to see.
According to local folklore the island was once a pirate stronghold and another story tells the tale of the island being ruled by a Queen who had skin sensitive to the sun. A covered road was built from her palace on the top of the island down to the sea so she could go for a swim, parts of an arched road do still exist so perhaps there is some truth to the story.
Taking its name from the Greek 'Kakava' meaning 'the island of partridges' (although none can be seen today), Kekova Island is situated just off the mainland. As you cruise the channel keep your eyes out, the area is famous for the submerged ruins, the submerged harbour at Kale Köy and the sarcophagus breaking through the water.
Kalkan is a harbour town with an addictive charm all of its own. You will be entranced by its narrow streets and cobbled alleyways with their 'higgledy piggledy' houses, leading up the hillside surrounding the enchanting harbour.
Kas is a relaxed harbour town; its name means 'eyebrow' in Turkish, a reference to the curved shape of the picturesque harbour, with its traditional tea garden and tiny, whitewashed mosque. Its narrow streets are overlooked by Lycian rock tombs and, wandering them you may well stumble on an ancient sarcophagus, a relic of the ancient city of Antiphellos, whose theatre also remains.
