New Voyage Privé —
Carefully selected by our experts especially for you
Your Destination —
This hilly city, Switzerland’s fourth largest and the capital of the canton of Vaud, enjoys a blessed lakeside location. The medieval centre is dominated by a grand Gothic cathedral, while the rest of the city boasts unique museums devoted to interests as diverse as Art Brut and the Olympics. Throughout the year Lausanne’s citizens are treated to a busy arts calendar, alongside a plethora of activities beside (and on) the lake.
Strolling the lakeshore in picturesque Ouchy (once a lakeside village in its own right, but long since enveloped by the city) is a pleasant diversion. Equally enjoyable is a meander, day or night, around Flon, an area of formerly derelict warehouses rejuvenated as a hip urban centre with a cinema complex, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars.
Home to two highly regarded universities and a happening design school, the Federal Tribunal (Switzerland’s highest court), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and numerous sporting federations and multinational corporations, Lausanne is a dynamic little city punching well above its weight.
Your Hotel —
Welcome to Hotel Royal Savoy, a grand hotel reborn last year after a $100 million makeover. Built in 1906, the Royal Savoy was grand indeed, serving as the haven for the Spanish royal family and King Bhumibol of Thailand during the Second World War, and later for rock royalty like Joe Cocker and Phil Collins, headlining at the nearby Montreux Jazz Festival in the 1990s.
Today, the elegant facade has been maintained, but inside there has been a massive reconstruction, paving the way for dramatic modern interiors by Maria Vafiadis of MKV Design in London.
The reborn Royal Savoy has 196 rooms. The hotel’s new wing is all glass and terraces–midcentury modern cool in a city that was an incubator of 1930s architecture by such masters as Le Corbusier. These rooms have the sleek, edited look that dominates guest rooms in Swiss hotels these days, with striped fabrics to soften all the hardwood surfaces. The overall effect is elegant, discreetly expensive and drama-free. This is Switzerland, after all. The new wing also houses the inevitable spa (or “clinic,” as the Swiss call it), along with a fitness centre and indoor-outdoor pool.
