Positioned just off the southern coast of India, the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka is a paradise of emerald-green rainforest and sugary sands. This kaleidoscopic destination boasts some of the wildest, most exotic scenery in the Indian Ocean, with elephants, dolphins and leopards all residents of the island.

Wilpattu National ParkWilpattu
National Park is located 26km north of Puttalam (approx. 180km north of Colombo) spanning from the northwest coast inland towards the ancient capital of Anuradhapura (50 km to the east of the park). Covering an impressive 425 sq miles, the park is Sri Lanka's largest, and having reopened in March 2010 it is just a matter of time before it becomes a popular eco-tourism destination. It boasts an impressive variety of flora in huge expanses of forest, and varied wildlife, including deer, elephants, wild boar, sloth bears and leopards.

Sigiriya rock fortress & 'Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya
Climb the 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress which is a world heritage site, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). The 'Lion Rock' is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster.

Minneriya National Park
The extent of the Minneriya National Park is about 8,889 hectares. There are wet-lands in this National Park, which have international importance, animal and plant species, which are plenty in dry zone are found in this park. Wild elephants, various amphibians, local and immigrant bird species are plenty in this park. About 160 species of birds, 9 amphibians, 25 reptile species, 26 fish species and more than 78 butterfly species have been found in this area. There are bamboo trees which are rare in other parks and wild elephants can be seen conveniently. The significant feature is that these elephants can be seen going closer to them.
Wasgamuwa National Park
The Wasgamuwa National Park is located in the districts of Matale and Polonnaruwa. It is famous for its large herd of elephants and also langur monkeys, wild boar, sambur, buffaloes and on rare occasions, leopards and sloth bears. Wasgamuwa is also home to a variety of species of butterflies and birds. The tropical dry mixed evergreen forestation is evident from the range of trees and plants in the region.

Gal Oya National ParkGal
Oya National Park in Sri Lanka was established in 1954 and serves as the main catchment area for Senanayake Samudraya, the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka. Senanayake Samudraya was built under the Gal Oya development project by damming the Gal Oya at Inginiyagala in 1950. An important feature of the Gal Oya National Park is its elephant herd that can be seen throughout the year. Three important herbs of the Ayurveda medicine, Triphala: Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica and Emblica officinalis are a mongst the notable flora of the forest. If you are lucky, you might even see elephants swimming between islands.

Udawalawe National Park
The area of this park is 30,821 hectares and is a dry zone park which was declared as a national park in 1972. This park falls within the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and between Udawalawe reservoir and the Walawe River and is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the mountain range that keep on winding endlessly on the Balangoda, Kalthota and Haputale escarpments. This park is world famous for its elephants seen in all their playfulness, whole herds of them, adults and babies bathing and playing in the water or feeding. In addition to the elephants, deer species such as spotted deer, sambhur, barking deer and langur, water buffalo and jackal are some of the prominent wild animals found in this park.
Elephant Transit Home
The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe helps to care for injured elephants from all over Sri Lanka. It's on the main road about 5km west of the Uda Walawe National Park entrance. Supported by the Born Free Foundation, the complex is a halfway house for orphaned elephants. After rehabilitation, the elephants are released back into the wild, many into the Uda Walawe National Park. At the time of research 64 elephants had been rehabilitated at the Elephant Transit Home and subsequently released.

Bundala National Park
Covering an area of 6216 hectares of eco tourism appeal, the Bundala National Park is located about 250km southeast of Colombo in the Hambantota district. The bio diversity of this park is immense: a total of 383 plant species have been recorded from the park, including 6 endemics and 7 species that are considered nationally threatened.
Yala National Park
Yala is the largest National Park in Sri Lanka which is the home for wild elephants, wild boars, wild buffaloes, leopards, bears, deer and crocodiles.  Large flocks of migratory and indigenous birds are also found here.
Mirissa Beach
Mirissa beach is located close to the southern-most part of the island and consists of beautiful beaches that promise an absolutely tranquil holiday.

Mirissa is renowned as a prime location for whale and dolphin watching. The beach also provides ample opportunities for deep sea diving, snorkelling and river trips. Whale Watching in Mirissa has been one of the most popular attractions amongst tourists who visit Sri Lanka. It remains the best place to witness blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Blue whales are the largest and rarest marine mammal on earth.

Day 1Arrive and transfer from Airport to Chilaw (approx. 50 mins). Rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight stay in Anantya Hotel.

Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from Chilaw to Wilpattu (approx 2.5 hrs) in the late morning. In the afternoon do a Safari at Wilpattu National Park.

Transfer from Wilpattu to Habarana (approx. 2 hrs).

Overnight stay at Cinnamon Lodge.

Day 3
Breakfast at the Hotel. Climb the 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya. Transfer from Habarana to Minneriya (approx 20 mins).
        
In the evening do a safari of the Minneriya National Park by jeep. Return to Habarana (approx. 20 mins).

Overnight stay at Cinnamon Lodge.

Day 4
Breakfast at the Hotel. Transfer from Habarana to Wasgamuwa (approx. 2.5 hrs).

In the afternoon do a game drive in the Wasgamuwa National Park.

Overnight stay at Farcry Boutique Resort.

Day 5
Breakfast at the Hotel. Transfer from Wasgamuwa to Ampara via Batticaloa (approx. 3 hrs).
        
In the afternoon do the Gal Oya National Park by boat.
        
Overnight stay in Monty Hotel (Ampara).

Day 6
Breakfast at the Hotel. Transfer from Galoya to Udawalawe (approx. 3 hrs).
        
Do a safari of the Udawalawe National Park by jeep in the afternoon.

Overnight stay in Kalu's Hideway.

In the morning (08:45 hrs) visit The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe. Transfer from Udawalawe to Bundala (approx. 2 hrs).

In the evening do a safari at Bundala National Park. Transfer from Bundala to Yala (approx. 1 hr).

Overnight stay at Cinnamon Wild Yala.

Day 8
Early morning do a safari of the Yala National Park by jeep.
        
Late breakfast at at the hotel. Rest of the morning at leisure. Take a dip and relax by the hotel pool, which overlooks the jungle.
        
In the afternoon do another safari at Yala National park.

Overnight stay in Cinnamon Wild Yala.

Day 9
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Yala to Mirissa (approx. 4 hrs).

Rest of the day at leisure.

Early morning proceed for a Whale Watching in the deep sea.

If you have booked transfers, 'Meet & Greet', car hire or airport lounges, you will receive a separate voucher for each of these services.  Please note that transfer vouchers are sent directly from the transfer supplier.

The current charge for a single entry visa for a British passport holder is US$30 (subject to change without notice). You may opt to obtain a visa on arrival, although the charge for this is US$35 and may involve you in some delay at the airport. Non-British passport holders should check with the relevant embassy for documentation requirements.
