In a sheltered a pocket, approached by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast isolated rock mass and it was here that king Valagambahu took refuge in the 01st century B.C. when fleeing from his enemies. He later turned the caves into a rock temple. The Golden Temple of Dambulla has been the centre of pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus alike for 22 centuries. It is Sri Lanka’s most popular historic site. The Cave monastery, home to Buddhist monks is covered with exquisite 2,000-year-old murals depicting the life and times of the Lord Buddha. The shrines also house a collection of 157 statues of Buddha in various sizes and poses, including a 15-meter-long reclining Buddha and vividly coloured frescoes on the walls and ceiling, making this the largest antique painted surface in the world.

Matale is famous for its batik production and spice gardens. Batik has been an ancient art of painting cloth and today Sri Lanka is among the world leaders in the design of batik. Batik galleries and factories offer batik from simple single-colored designs to intricate multi-colored masterpieces. For centuries, spices have been one of Sri Lanka's celebrated exports. Spices are mostly grown in home gardens (as a home industry) and used not only to flavor food but also for medicine and cosmetics.

On completion, proceed to your hotel in Kandy and spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the hotel amenities. Dinner & Overnight stay at Cinnamon Citadel or Similar.

Sri Lankan cuisine distinguishes itself through the freshness of herbs and the longer roasting of spices, drawing on the old influences of Arab and Malay traders.

DAY 4 KANDY
After breakfast at the hotel, visit to the Geragama Tea Factory. (Approx Transfer time: 40 minutes to 1 Hrs drive) No culinary tour in Sri Lanka is complete without seeing how the best tea in the world is made. The Geragama Tea Estate is not too far from the center of Kandy, which was already on our route. While it isn’t in the heart of picturesque tea country, it’s an ideal place to visit.

Once upon a time when Sri Lanka was a British colony (from 1815 to 1948), the island’s name was Ceylon. In the beginning of British rule, tea plants were introduced to the island in hopes of creating a lucrative export industry. Something about the terroir and climate of Sri Lanka must have been perfect for tea cultivation, because the tea coming out of Sri Lanka – Ceylon Tea – was excellent. High quality, excellent flavor, unique. Since then, the name Ceylon was erased from the rest of the country upon its independence from the British in 1948, but the tea industry is the one place where the name Ceylon is still used and means something positive. Ceylon tea is known as one of the best teas in the world and is crucial to the Sri Lankan economy.

On completion, proceed to Kirinda Walauwa for local lunch with cooking demonstration. (Approx Transfer time: 40 minutes to 1 Hrs drive)

Kirinda Walauwa is an ancient mansion of an aristocratic family, which dates back over 200 years. 'Kirinda' is the name of the village, while 'walauwa' is the home of an aristocratic Kandyan family. It is situated in the town of Gampola, which is about 16 Km from the hill capital, Kandy. The walauwa lies in a picteresque valley, in a 12 acre estate of mixed plantation of spices, coconut and fruits, surrounded by mountains and lush green paddy fields.

On completion proceed to Kandy to explore the ancient city

Kandy is a lovely city, the Hill Capital and last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings retains an aura of grandeur, which time has not affected. Encircled by hills, with a tranquil lake in its center, it is the site of the renowned "Temple of the Tooth". Kandy and its satellite villages is the center of the island’s handicraft industry and its traditional dances are the most spectacular in the country.

Thereafter make a visit to The Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha.Afterwards, walk around the lake or take a small boat ride (optional). Then explore the vegetable market near the lake, very lively and though sometimes full of pushy vendors, the diversity of products and the atmosphere make it a worthwhile visit.

On completion, proceed to your hotel in Kandy and spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the hotel amenities. Dinner & Overnight stay at Cinnamon Citadel or Similar.
