Addo

Established in 1931 to save 11 Elephants on the brink of extinction, this national park is now home to more than 350 elephants, 280 cape buffalo, black rhino, a range of antelope species, as well as the rare flightless dung Beetle.

Hluhluwe

Hluhluwe is a small town in northern KwaZulu-Natal and is proclaimed the oldest reserve in Africa with 96,000 Hectares of wilderness, rolling hills and magnificent wildlife. Here you will really get a chance to see some of the finest animals on the planet!

Swaziland

Kruger National Park

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town
Upon arrival at Cape Town Airport, you will be welcomed by a representative, who will give you your travel documents and assist you to take care of your rental car. 
You will then spend 2 nights at the Premier Cape Manor hotel or similar. 

Day 2: Cape Town (B) 
Depart for a visit of the Cape Peninsula - drive towards the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean to reach Hout Bay, a small fishing port posed in its fjord-like postcard landscape. You can then take a little boat to discover Duiker Island and see sea lions or stop at Boulders beach to see penguins colonies. 

Visit the Cape of Good Hope Natural Reserve which covers 7,750 hectares of native flora and fauna. You may then enjoy a visit to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. This is a new renovation and development project that gives the little harbour its original atmosphere whilst having entertainment, shops, restaurants, museum, hiking paths and more, for you to enjoy. Night at the hotel.

Day 3: Cape Town - Stellenbosch - Franschhoek - Hermanus (B)
 Depart down the famous Garden Route, a synonymous region of South Africa for its vineyards and towering mountains that dominate fertile valleys, in which wonderful properties are nestled amongst. 

Visit Stellenbosch, the main town of the vineyard region which today comprises more than 100,000 hectares of vineyards. The Cape wines have a long-standing reputation worldwide and it is in this region that you will see many "Cape Dutch" style architecture. Take some time to stop by and taste some in local properties.

Follow along the road to Franschhoek, the "French side" of The Garden Route. In this beautiful valley where the French Huguenots and Dutch settled, visit the beautiful town and the Huguenots museum.

Continue along to Hermanus where you will spend 2 nights at Harbor House Guest House or similar.

Day 4: Hermanus (B)
In Hermanus, a picturesque and traditional former fishing village, you will be in the perfect place to Whale Watch. From June to November, during their migration season, the warm waters intice these spectacular sea creatures to the are of Hermanus.

You have two optional excursions here that you can participate in (an additional supplement to be paid):

Option 1: Whale Watching Cruise - The South African coast has no less than 8 species of whales, the best known is the Southern Right Whale. With its low cliffs bathed in crystal clear water, Hermanus is one of the world's best whale watching sites. From June to November, you are almost guaranteed to see one or even several whales!

Option 2: Cage Diving with Great White Sharks, Gansbaai - The great white shark is one of the most endangered species of sharks. Terrifying for some, synonymous with advanced evolution for others, the great white shark fascinates.

Night in Hermanus.

Day 5: Hermanus - Knysna (B)
Drive along towards Knysna where you can spend some time in the Knysna lagoon - a world-famous site. The Knysna Heads are two huge sandstone cliffs that mark the mouth of the Knysna River.

You will then spend 2 nights at Alfreds Manor Guest House or similar

Day 6: Knysna (B)
Whilst in the are, stop at the Tsitsikamma Forest. Explore the ancient and mysterious forest by walking through an impressive tangle of trees and ferns and making your way to the Forest Monarch, an imposing Outeniqua Yellowwood, over 700 years old. Visit Monkeyland, the first sanctuary in the world that houses various species of primates. Accompanied by game wardens, visitors go on foot for safaris in the native forest.

The region of Knysna has a multitude of hiking trails: guided hiking tours can be organised before any booking. The difficulty of hiking trails varies from the quiet Jubilee creek trail (3.6 km) to the more challenging trails (25km +). Night in Knysna.

Day 7: Knysna - Addo (B/D)
Departure towards Addo, an elephant park near Port Elizabeth. The first section of the park was founded in 1931, thanks to Sydney Skaife, an entomologist and South African naturalist, to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area.

At 2.30 pm you will meet a representative for assistance at Addo Airfield, where you will leave your rental car, then take a transfer to the lodge. You have free time in the afternoon. At 7 pm enjoy an aperitif and dinner.
You will then spend 2 nights at Camp Fig Tree on a full board basis with activities included. 

Day 8: Camp Fig Tree (B/L/D)
At 8 am, depart for your first interaction with the elephants then after you will return for lunch and free time in the afternoon. At 3 pm, depart for a safari in the reserve. You will have dinner upon your return to the camp. 

Day 9: Camp Fig Tree - Port Elizabeth / Durban - Hluhluwe (B)
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Addo Airfield. You will then go to Port Elizabeth, where you will return your car and take your flight to Durban.

Upon arrival in Durban, pick up your rental car and then take the road to Maputaland, a large region of sugar cane fields, viewable from the road, as well as huge plantations of eucalyptus and fir trees. 

All Maputaland lands belong to the "Zulu King"- The Zulus arrived in this region around the beginning of the 17th century. They planted cereals that they brought with them, and lived on the hunt. Corn was brought to them by Portuguese traders. Elephants were very common in this region during the time of the "Nguni" people. For the Zulus, the elephant is "Ndlovu" - sacred. But the king "Shaka Zulu" learned to know and appreciate the passion that the whites had for ivory.

Stay for 1 night in Anew Hluhluwe Hotel or similar.

Day 10: Hluhluwe - Swaziland (B/D)
Depart for your 4x4 safari in the reserve towards Swaziland. This small, independent kingdom owes its picturesque character to the conservation of its traditions, habitats, ceremonies and political institutions. 
By 4 pm you will enter the Mkhaya reserve, known for its rhinos and being one of the largest private reserves in Swaziland. This safari 4x4 vehicle allows an extraordinary approach to wild animals living in the heart of their environment. 

In the early evening, you will be dropped at the lodge where you will spend 1 night at Mkhaya Camp or similar. 

Day 11: Swaziland - Blyde Region (B)
Take your second 4x4 safari in the Mkhaya Reserve (About 1hr of safari) then take to the roads on your own. 
Visit the "Mantenga Cultural Village" to discover the customs and "Swazi" language which has a strong "Sotho" influence. The community will share its indigenous knowledge and practices, which will not leave you indifferent.

Along the way visit a craft market where you will find all Swazi crafts gathered in a relaxed atmosphere and visit a factory of Swazi candles. Then continue onwards to the Blyde Region.

Stay for 1 night at Gecko Lodge or similar.

Day 12: Blyde Region - Kruger National Park (B)
Drive to the Blyde River Canyon, a gigantic 26 km-long gorge dug into the rocky escarpment and its magnificent landscapes. Visit "Bourke's Luck Potholes", deep cylindrical cavities formed by fluvial erosion and floods. 

Look through Gods Window where you can discover a panorama that extends over kilometres of mountains covered with dense forests. The Three Rondavels have one of the most beautiful views on the vastness of the canyon and the lake.

Take a cruise along the Blyde where you will have the opportunity to observe crocodiles, hippos and birds in their natural environment. You will have a vision from the lake of Three Rondavels and the beautiful landscapes of this region.

Upon arrival at Kruger National Park, you can take a safari in your own vehicle or on a 4x4 vehicle grouped in the reserve.

Stay for 2 nights in a camp at Kruger National Park.

Day 13: Kruger National Park 
Enter Kruger on a 4x4 group trip or in your own vehicle to view the high density of wild animals including lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos - The Big 5 (Park admission is to be paid on the day - ZAR372 per person (may vary).

Day 14: Kruger National Park - Polokwane
Take another opportunity to enter Kruger on a 4x4 group trip or in your own vehicle. 

You will then drive onto Polokwane to stay for 1 night at the Protea Hotel The Ranch or similar.

Day 15: Polokwane - Johannesburg (B)
Depart early to get some distance behind you so you reach Johannesburg in good time. Spend the day exploring at your own leisure:

Constitution Hill
- This national heritage site is the headquarters of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. It was the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Robert Sobukwe and Nelson Mandela were imprisoned, as well as other students of the 1976 revolt. It shelters:- the old fort (one of Johannesburg's oldest monuments)- the former prison for white men (Nelson Mandela was the only man with black skin to be incarcerated)- the former women's prison (where Winnie Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and Fatima Meer were detained)- the new

Constitutional Court Apartheid Museum
- The Apartheid Museum, which opened in November 2001, is a site not to be missed in Johannesburg. It attracts nearly 500 visitors a day and is recognised worldwide as the premier museum of 20th-century history in South Africa, at the heart of which is apartheid.

Lilliesleaf in Rivonia (Johannesburg) - opened in 2001 and located in one of Johannesburg's business districts, this museum houses an exhibition depicting the history of Apartheid and bears witness to Nelson Mandela's fierce fight. The building was indeed the place of secret meetings of the ANC and above all, allowed Nelson Mandela, hiding, to hide for three months. Thanks to its original sources, the museum offers a fascinating approach to one of the most painful parts of the history of South Africa.

Stay 1 night at Zulu Nyala Country Manor or similar.

Day 16: Johannesburg - UK (B)
After breakfast, spend some time visiting the city and doing some suggest excursions. You will then rental car at Johannesburg Airport and take your flights home.

Car Hire

Please note you cannot be guaranteed a specific make of car within a certain group.
The minimum age for driving a hire car in South Africa is 21 and drivers must have held a full driving licence for a least 1 year.

The lead name on the booking will be confirmed as the named driver.  The named driver must present a credit card in their name when collecting the car (credit cards in other names will not be accepted).

The named driver must also present a full valid driving licence on collection of the vehicle and in some cases a credit card or cash deposit will be required.

Please ensure that you check your car hire documents carefully once received as this will advise if there are any taxes/charges to be paid locally as well as potential mileage restrictions.
