Your Destination

Marvelling at a 1300-year-old Maya palace at Palenque as parrots screech and howler monkeys growl in the sweaty emerald jungle around you. This is Mexico. Every visitor goes home with their own unforgettable images. Visit some of the country's iconic destinations - Cancun, Chichen Itza, Mayan Villages and the famed Puuc Route. Such a large country, straddling temperate and tropical zones, reaching 5km into the sky and stretching 10,000km along its coasts, with a city of 19 million people at its center and countless tiny pueblos everywhere, can hardly fail to provide a huge variety of options for human adventure.

Your Itinerary

Day 1  Arrival Cancun
Over 40 years ago Cancun was no more than a sand bar, clinging to Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Only in the 70s the government saw the appeal of the area’s shimmering turquoise waters and sparkling white sand, largely untouched since the mysterious decline of the Mayan Empire around the 13th century. Today, Cancun is an exciting beach destination and gateway to the Mundo Maya, or Maya World. Enjoy the magnificent beaches, crystal to clear waters and elegant hotels, as well as the breathtaking nearby Mayan ruins, exotic wildlife, and colonial towns. And some of the best diving and snorkeling can be found here! Hotel La Quinta Inn & Suites Cancun (Category: 4 star) - Overnight standard room, incl. breakfast buffet (1 Night)

Day 2  To Merida

Built more than 450 years ago on the site of T’ho, an ancient Mayan city, Merida is the social and economic center, as well as the capital, of the state of Yucatan. Merida’s downtown area features a large, tree-shaded central square. The city’s main boulevard, Paseo Montejo, is home to impressive European-style mansions whose pastel shades and elaborate trim are reminiscent of lavishly iced wedding cakes.

Though a bustling city of about 700,000, Merida retains its colonial charm and has a laid-back tempo that delights visitors. It makes a good base from which to explore the Mayan archaeological sites of Chichen-Itza and Uxmal. Pink flamingo sanctuaries and swimmable crystal-clear cenotes (sinkholes) are some of the natural attractions of the Yucatan Peninsula that are easily accessible from Merida.

Hotel La Mision de Fray Diego (Category: 5 star) - Overnight standard room, incl. american breakfast (3 Nights)

Location: In the historic center. Features: 26 elegant rooms with air conditioning, pool, restaurant and free golf facilities in aprox. 15 km. The hotel is a beautiful mansion of the 18th century and was recently renovated.

Day 3 Full-day Uxmal and Kabah archaeological sites and the Puuc route, incl. lunch (private service)

We will visit the archaeological site of Uxmal, a World Heritage Site, located 80km south of Merida. Its architecture is characterized by low horizontal palaces set around courtyards, decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting the long-nosed rain god Chaac.

We will explore the magnificent buildings, including the House of the Magician – which dominates the site, the Nunnery, and the House of Turtles. We continue to Kabah, with its amazing Palace of the Masks, covered in nearly 300 masks of Chaac. We continue driving along the Puuc Route, a road that winds past the Mayan ruins of Labna, Xlapak and Sayil. These sites give us a great insight into the Puuc (Mayan name for ‘hills’) civilization. Our first stop is Labna, once a city inhabited by some 3000 Mayas. To support such numbers in these arid hills, water was collected in ‘chultunes’ (water cisterns), some of the original 60 chultunes still visible. We then drive to Xlapak. This site of 14 structures and 3 pyramids is less restored, so we can see what the sites looked like when they were first discovered. Our last stop is Sayil, home to the beautiful El Palacio, a huge three-tiered building which is a splendid example of the rich Puuc style of intricate stone mosaics. Includes lunch.

Day 4  Mayan Villages (Ticul and Santa Elena) and the Grottes of Calcehtok, incl. dinner (shared service)
Including English speaking guide

We will drive to Ticul, located 85 kms south of Merida. This village is a quiet and beautiful city which its main commercial activities are: the footwear industry and the elaboration of classic pottery. We will continue to Santa Elena, a town of approximately 20,000 inhabitants; it was a maya settlement of the Xiu Tribe that ruled the city of Uxmal at the end of the classic period. Its main activities are: the agriculture, cattle raising, apiculture and tourism. At the end of the day we will visit the Calcehtok Grottes to observe thousands of bats coming out of the caves.
Day 5  To Chichen Itza
The famous Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza are over 1500 years old. The name Chichen Itza is a Mayan word: CHI (mouth) CHEN (well) and ITZA (of the Itzaes). Some say this is because people were often thrown into the nearby cenote as sacrifices, and those who survived were believed to be seers.

The site is divided into three sections. The North grouping of structures is distinctly Toltec in style. The central group appears to be from the early period. The southern group is known as "The Old Chichen”.
You will find a large ball court where Mayan men played a game called pok ta pok. Anthropologists believe that the object of the game was to hurl a ball through a ring that was mounted on a wall, seven meters above the ground. Each team had six field players who would attempt to pass the ball - using any body part except their hands - to their captain who would attempt the shot using a racket of sorts. The captain of the team that made the first successful shot was then decapitated as a sacrifice to the gods. This was seen as an honor and guaranteed entrance into heaven.
Chichen-Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the 'New 7 World Wonders', a unique place to be discovered!

Full-day Chichen-Itza archaeological site, incl. lunch (shared service)
We will drive to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, located 120km east of Merida. Chichen Itza – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World – is the best restored of Yucatan’s Mayan sites. We will explore the magnificent ruins set in a dense jungle, including the Pyramid of Kukulcan – its height and striking geometric design dominating the whole site, the Great Ball Court – the largest and most impressive in Mesoamerica, the Sacred Cenote – a natural well used for human sacrifice, and many other beautiful temples. Approx. duration 9 hours. Includes lunch.

Hotel Hacienda Chichen Resort (Category: Boutique) - Overnight standard room (1 Night)
Location: Next to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza. Features: 28 comfortable rooms (with air conditioning, ceiling fan, minibar and terrace with hammock) distributed in bungalows surrounded by beautiful gardens, pool, spa, restaurant and bar. Historic hacienda, where the first archaeologists lived when discovering the archaeological site.

Day 6  To Riviera Maya

From Cancun in the north to the archaeological site of Tulum in the south stretches a magnificent coastline, peppered with tropical parks, snorkeling and diving havens, small rustic hotels and luxurious resorts: the Riviera Maya.

Here you can find the small coastal fishing village of Puerto Morelos with its attractive beaches and somewhat bohemian village life, and the nearby Palancar Aquarium, Croco Cun crocodile farm, and the Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin Botanical Garden, which features a replica of a typical Mayan home, a nature trail and native plant species like cacao and chicle (chewing gum) trees.

Continuing south comes Playa del Carmen. Just a few years ago, this former fishing village served merely as a springboard for visitors taking the ferry to Cozumel. But as more and more ferry-bound lingered to enjoy its Caribbean beaches and rustic charms, the town came into its own as a resort destination. “Playa,” as it is called by locals, is growing, but still preserves a certain small-town charm and bohemian following.

Then comes Puerto Aventuras, with its deep-water marina, golf course, beautiful hotels, shops, restaurants and dive centres. At Puerto Aventuras, you can swim with dolphins or simply pet them at Dolphin Discovery.
Further south is Akumal, which means “land of the turtles” in the Mayan language. It owes its enchantment to the fresh waters of its caves and subterranean rivers. More than 200 entrances to subterranean caves, with depths of up to 150 meters, make it a gathering place for divers from around the world.

And then there is Tulum, the only walled city the Maya built and the only one by the edge of the Caribbean. When the Spanish first came upon the site in 1518, they recorded that it was as large as Seville. The major construction is the Castle, a handsome pyramid perched on the edge of a cliff high above the pearl-white beaches below. From here one can see most of the ancient city, as well as a magnificent view of the coastline.  Hotel Hacienda Chichen Resort - American breakfast x 1 Day Hotel Sandos Caracol Eco-Resort & Spa (Category: 5*) - All inclusive (5 Nights)

Day 7  At leisure x 4 Days
Here you can utilise your time as you please - explore the city, relax in the hotel, make the most of your time in Mexico.
