Your Destination —
Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major economic centre and home to mosques, palaces and gardens.
The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire with mazelike alleys where thriving souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewelry. Food vendors line Djemaa el-Fna, a broad square where storytellers and musicians perform.
For centuries, people from the Atlas, Drâa and Dadès Valleys converged to do business at Ouarzazate’s sprawling Taourirt Kasbah, and a modern garrison town was established here in the 1920s to oversee France’s colonial interests. The movie business gradually took off in Ouarzazate after the French protectorate left in the 1950s, and ‘Ouallywood’ movie studios have built quite a résumé providing convincingly exotic backdrops for movies supposedly set in Tibet, ancient Rome, Somalia and Egypt.
Unlike other Glaoui kasbahs, Taourirt escaped ruin by moonlighting as a Hollywood backdrop (Sheltering Sky, Gladiator, Prince of Persia ) and attracting the attention of Unesco, which has carefully restored small sections of the inner sanctum. Follow the maze of stairwells to the top floor, where you’ll find a prayer room through keyhole archways, traces of stucco and an original tataoui ceiling. Wander through the village inside the kasbah walls, and you might also find deals on local crafts in backstreet shops.
One of the absolute highlights of a trip to Morocco is seeing the vast Saharan sand dunes and camping under the stars. In Morocco, you have the choice between two broad areas where you can visit proper dunes; the Erg Chebbi dunes near to Merzouga and the Erg Chegaga dunes close to M'hamid. Both sets of dunes offer a fantastic experience.
Erg Chegaga is a much younger destination, as owing to border disputes with Algeria, tourists have only been visitng since the 1990's. That said, it is becoming more popular and there are more camps than there used to be. As far as solitude is concerned, however, it still has the upper hand over Erg Chebbi.
The journey down to Erg Chegaga is fascinating. You can add a visit to Ait Ben Haddou along the way and then follow the Draa Valley and the many oases & crumbling Kasbahs dotted along the way. Once you reach the small town of Mhamid, you can continue on to one of the camps on the dunes, or you can trek by camel direct from there.
The Ounila is the verdant, narrow-sided river valley that runs between Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet, just south of the High Atlas mountains. There is plenty to discover in this beautiful Valley.
The route of the Ounila Valley was part of the main caravan trade route to Marrakech, from sub-Saharan Africa, and the High Atlas were crossed at the Telouet Pass, beyond Telouet (centuries before the French constructed the road used today, across the Tichka Pass). Due to its pivotal location, it is unsurprising that a melting pot of cultures co-existed there centuries ago – Berber, Haratin, Jewish.
The Valley is hemmed in by imposing sandstone cliffs and barren hillsides, and is peppered with typical pise-constructed dwellings and crumbling kasbahs (ksar). Aside from Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet, the Kasbah Tamdaght is worth a visit.
