Your Destination

Discover the bustling souks of Marrakech, the highest mountain range in North Africa, and the sweeping sand dunes of the Sahara on this exciting tour.

The High Atlas run diagonally across Morocco, from the Atlantic Coast northeast of Agadir all the way to northern Algeria, a distance of almost 1000km. In Berber it's called Idraren Draren (Mountain of Mountains) and it's not hard to see why.

Flat-roofed, earthen Berber villages cling tenaciously to the valley sides, while irrigated terraced gardens and walnut groves flourish below. On this tour you will explore the lush valleys, irrigated by springs, palatial kasbahs recalling an ancient past and fortified villages which have stood the test of time. All this, against a backdrop of burnished red sands and snow-capped peaks... Welcome to Morocco!

Your Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival to Marrakech airport
Meet and greet by our representative and transfer to your riad.
Dinner and overnight at Riad Zaid or similar.

Day 2:  Marrakech – Tizi n Tichka – Agdez – Zagora – M’hamid Elghizlane
Departure early morning from your riad/hotel in Marrakech and travel through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tichka Pass (2260 m) – the highest road pass in Morocco offering spectacular panoramic views of the mountains and valleys with a snaky road, beautiful landscapes with different colours and the Berber villages along the way. Visit several kasbahs along the way, including Tamnougalte. Free time for lunch at Agdez Valley.

The trip continues through the palm-lined Draa river valley. Arrival to Zagora and visit its surroundings especially the Jewish quarter in Amzerou and the palm groves. Afterwards, we continue our trip towards the doorway to Sahara Desert (Mhamid). Along the way, we stop in the the original town of the 16th century dynasty ( Saadian), Tamgroute, to visit an old Coran library and a subterranean kasbah. We arrive to Mhamid where the Draa valley and civilization end. Around 4pm you will start the nomadic life by riding the dromedaries and travel along the desert with its different facet of life and meet one of the most fascinating sand dunes sights we will ever see, the superb sunset in the middle of the high sand dune.

Dinner and night will be enjoyed at Luxury tent in Erg Lihoudi Sahara Services Camp.

Day 3:  M’hamid Elghizlane - Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou
Following an early morning stroll before breakfast to enjoy the sunrise among the sand dunes (optional), ride your camel back to Mhamid and meet your driver for the start of your return journey to ait benhaddou  along Draa Valley and tansikht, ( see the henna fields), discovering the hidden treasures of the Southern region and the road of 1000 kasbahs. Arriv to Ouarzazate and free time for lunch.

Continue to Tamdakht Village and check in to the hotel.  Visit the kasbah Ait Benhaddou, the postcard- like UNESCO adobe citadel. A fat, red sun, only underlines the beige tones of the mud and straws mixture and through the covered passages and stone walls, the past filters itself into the present. Ksar Ait Benhaddou has been used as a backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters. It was one of the most important fortress strongholds on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought slaves, gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and beyond.

Dinner and overnight at Ksar Ighnda

Day 4:  Ait Benhaddou - Telouet – Marrakech
After a late breakfast we will head to Ounila Valley until we find ourselves on the ancient route caravans used to bring the much sought- after goods at the court of the Sultan. We soon reach Telouet to visit the pasha's palace dominate the village, a fortified citadel that is both a microcosm of an empire and its demise.

He had managed to overshadow the sultan by controlling most of nowadays Morocco and decided to erect a palace in the middle of nowhere, where his family had originated from. He had employed the most skilled artisans to build and decorate his main residence and, in its golden age, armies, stables and Christian slaves were confined within its walls while a flourishing Jewish community managed the nearby salt mines.

We will then start our way back crossing the High Atlas, this time on the national road, once a camel track that was turned into a proper road suitable for vehicles in the 1030's with the help of the French Foreign Legion. The end of the tour serpents its way past abrupt valleys. and mountain peaks to descend onto Marrakech later in the afternoon.

Dinner and Overnight at Riad Zaid or similar.

Optional Excursions

You may choose to add a full day tour of Essaouria, a visit to the Ouzoud Falls and/or  a traditional Hammam & Massage.

Essaouira.
Leave Marrakech behind and head towards the Atlantic coast of Essaouira. Your guide tells you about the history of the town and shows you characteristics of the 15th and 18th centuries, such as ramparts, the fishing port and harbour, Skala (market) and its quaint Medina.

It is then time to go to Skala, the municipal market. See countless artisans working in their workshops and the many arts that skilled craftsmen create. Walk through markets where stalls groan under the weight of colourful fruit and fresh vegetables, or simply wander through the harbour and witness the hive of activity at the water's edge. If you choose to, enjoy a scrumptious lunch served at one of the many restaurants that line the coast (not included).  Before heading back to Marrakech, your guide takes you to key points in the city, including the port, Medina – the old town filled with souks – and Mellah, a Jewish quarter.
Ouzoud Falls
Ouzoud Falls, one of the most breathtaking places in the country & highest natural waterfalls in North Africa.  Green valleys, orchards, caves, gorges from the river El Abid and happy Barbary apes in their natural habitat make this tour a perfect day out. Leave the city behind and pass red cliffs, oleander and doves en route to one of Morocco's most spectacular sights. The Ouzoud waterfalls are located in a plush valley near the High Atlas Mountains, within the friendly Berber village of Tanaghmeilt. This tiered series of three waterfalls plunges from 110 metres (360 feet) above, its wide-to-narrow streams splashing into the river below.

A short walk takes you to the top of the falls where you can admire the beauty of the nature beneath your feet. Here you can also have lunch in a Berber restaurant and enjoy the waterfalls from its shaded terraces, or walk down the steps & explore the caves where water mills are used to grind wheat grain into flour (thereby the Berber word ‘Ouzoud’ meaning grinding grain).

Keep an eye out for apes coming to drink from the river, and have your camera ready to capture the cataracts and rainbows that can appear near the bottom of the waterfalls.

Traditional Hammam & Massage
Just relax, and choose a time to be picked up and taken to a traditional hammam – a body scrub with natural black organic ghassoul, made from clay extracted from the Atlas beds, rich in magnesium, calcium & potassium & used for 12 centuries.  Then, be pampered with an hour long comforting massage, using authentic essential oils.

Feeling absolutely fabulous – shop in the nearby trendy boutiques, maybe have a light lunch in one of the fusion restaurants, or your driver will take you back to the riad.
