Your Destination —
Kotor: Wedged between brooding mountains and a moody corner of the bay, this dramatically beautiful town is perfectly at one with its setting. Its sturdy walls – started in the 9th century and tweaked until the 18th – arch steeply up the slopes behind it. From a distance they’re barely discernible from the mountain’s grey hide, but at night they’re spectacularly lit, reflecting in the water to give the town a golden halo. Within those walls lie labyrinthine marbled lanes where churches, shops, bars and restaurants surprise you on hidden piazzas.
Herceg Novi: The city of flowers, sun and stairs is situated 12 km from Bijela. History of Herceg Novi is an illustration of the reign of the major powers of these regions: Spanish, Venetians, Turks, French, Russian, Austro-Hungarians... Each of these empires has left significant traces of their civilization here, in the form of numerous fortifications, sacral and other buildings. Nowadays, this city is a treasury of different styles, from oriental architecture to Baroque.
The three Towers are dominant in the landscape of the city : Kanli Kula, Fotre Mare and Španjola. Nowadays, they are used as open-air summer theatres (the first two), where traditional film, music and theatre festivals are organised. Among other important buildings, we should definitely mention the Savina Monastery, one of the most beautiful pieces of baroque architecture on the Adriatic coast.
Perast: Looking like a chunk of Venice that has floated down the Adriatic and anchored itself onto the bay, Perast hums with melancholy memories of the days when it was rich and powerful. Despite having only one main street, this tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palazzos. While some are just enigmatic ruins sprouting bougainvillea and wild fig, others are caught up in the whirlwind of renovation that has hit the town. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are said to have paid €2 million for a house here.
The town slopes down from the highway to a narrow waterfront road (Obala Marka Martinovića) that runs along its length. At its heart is St Nicholas' Church, set on a small square lined with date palms and the bronze busts of famous citizens.
