Day 2: Amman - Desert Castles - Amman City Tour
After breakfast, the full day excursion begins with a visit to some of the first Islamic art complexes, the Desert Castles. The desert castles of Jordan are beautiful examples of early Islamic art and architecture and are a testament to a fascinating era in the country's rich history. Its fine mosaics, frescoes, stone and stucco carvings and illustrations, inspired by the best of Persian and Greco-Roman traditions, tell innumerable stories of life as it was during the 8th century.
Next, we will take a tour of the modern capital of Jordan, Amman. Often referred to as the "White City" due to its facade of white limestone buildings and houses, Amman offers a variety of historic sites. A series of renovations and excavations have revealed remains from the Neolithic period, as well as from Hellenistic and late Roman times to Islamic Arabic.
After breakfast, enjoy a full day visit starting with Pella, one of the oldest cities in the world. Pella is exceptionally rich in antiquities, some of which are excessively old. In addition to the excavated ruins of the Greco-Roman period, Pella offers visitors the opportunity to see the remains of the Chalcolithic settlement of the 4th millennium BC.
In addition to Jerash and Haman, Gadara (now Um Qais) and Pella (Tabaqit Fahl) were cities of the Decapolis, and each has a unique appeal. Um Qais is one of the brightest Greco-Roman cities of the Decapolis. Perched on a splendid hill overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, Um Qais has fascinating ancient remains, such as the impressive black basalt theatre, the basilica and the adjacent courtyard strewn with beautifully carved black sarcophagi.
After breakfast, you will embark on a full day visit to Jerash,"The jewel of the north", one of the largest and best-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world. The golden age of the city came under Roman rule and is now one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. Hidden for centuries in the sand before being excavated and restored in the last 70 years, Jerash reveals a clear example of the great Roman provincial urbanism found throughout the Middle East, with paved streets, arcades, towering temples on the peaks, beautiful theaters, spacious public squares and esplanades, bathrooms, fountains and walls crossed by towers and doors.
Your journey continues towards the Dead Sea, one of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world and the lowest point on Earth. Once the waters reach the Dead Sea, they are trapped and have nowhere to go, so they evaporate, leaving a dense and rich cocktail of salts and minerals that supply industry, agriculture and medicine with some of their best products. The Dead Sea is flanked by mountains to the east and the hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost otherworldly beauty.
Return to the hotel in Amman to spend the night.
After breakfast, drive for 10 minutes to visit Little Petra (Al-Beidha), a major suburb of the city of Petra. It is believed that Little Petra was an important suburb of Petra, being the point of entry and exit of trade routes to the north and northwest. As in Petra, the buildings were carved into sandstone, used as residences, warehouses and tombs, with water channels and cisterns. In one of the buildings, you can find the remains of frescoes painted with birds.
Continue to Wadi Rum, the vast and resonant desert of Jordan, for a 4x4 Jeep ride. Impressive for its natural beauty, Wadi Rum embodies the romance of the desert. With its lunar landscape of ancient valleys and towering sandstone mountains rising from the sand, Wadi Rum is also home to several Bedouin tribes that live in camps scattered throughout the area. Climbers are especially attracted to Wadi Rum due to its granite and sandstone cliffs, while hikers enjoy its vast empty spaces.
Return to Amman to spend the night.
