If the year-round sunny weather, ancient temples and amazing beaches of Bali appeal, but the booming mass tourism puts you off, Lombok is your perfect destination - it has all these without the crowds.
There is so much to do around the island, if you can tear yourself away from your sunlounger the below sights are really worth a visit.
(15-20 minutes boat ride from the hotel) Famous for their white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and fringing coral reefs, the Gili Islands afford a perfect opportunity for a day trip. The pace of life is unhurried with the only means of transport being the Cidomo, a local pony and cart. You don't need to take much more than snorkelling equipment, a good book, your swim suit and a sarong.
Mount Rinjani is said to be the home of the Goddess Anjani, it represents a spiritual and sacred link to the Sasak people of Lombok as well as the Balinese. This still active volcano last erupting in 1995, is the largest in Indonesia and the second highest peak. As you gain elevation the trail opens to spectacular vistas of the ocean and surrounding countryside. At 2900 metres the breathtaking views are simply spectacular.
(1 hour 30 minutes drive from the hotel) On the lower slopes of Gunung Rinjani, Senaru village is braced by cool refreshing air. From here you will be rewarded with views of Mount Rinjani to the south and views of the ocean to the west. Once a secluded mountain settlement sheltered from the outside world, this village with its traditional style homes is fast becoming a tourist’s escape from the heat of the coastal regions.
Sedanggile is the place where the water comes straight off one of the highest peaks in Southeast Asia. It is considered to provide some of the purest and freshest water in Indonesia. After a light trek of 30-40 minutes, you will find Tiu Kelep waterfall. Here you can rest and swim in the cool waters.
