Your Destination —
Ubud, where Uma Hotel is located, is an artists’ town in the island’s lush central foothills, 90 minutes drive from the capital, Denpasar. This central region of the island, with its artisan culture and magnificent scenery, is a magnet for visitors, drawn to its volcanic peaks and verdant rice paddies.
Attractions include:
Just outside Ubud is Neka Art Museum, which holds the most extensive collection of Balinese paintings on the island.
To the north lies Mount Batur, a still active volcano. The crater contains the largest crater lake on the island. A sunrise trek to the summit is an incredible way to begin your day.
Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a protected area, home to over 500 long-tailed Macaque monkeys. These cheeky and intriguing creatures are easy to spot as they scamper about among the trees and temples within the sacred forest.
Goa Gajah is a cave temple, known as ‘Elephant Cave’, discovered in 1923 by a farmer cultivating his field. It is thought to originate from the 11th century. In the courtyard, water spouts from the hands of six stone nymphs and flows into two pools. Worshippers purify themselves before passing through the mouth of Boma’s giant face, carved on the entrance.
The quirky Sai Land Agritourism Centre is recommended to sample the excellent chocolate and coffee and to observe the traditional Balinese method of roasting and grinding coffee.
If you can tear yourself away from your sunlounger, there is plenty to do nearby:
The island has long been a popular destination for surfers and divers, with many beaches boasting outstanding waves (Geger Beach Uluwatu Beach, Padang Padang Beach) and some of the world's top dive sights just offshore (USS Liberty wreck.)
Tanah Lot Temple, accessible via a small causeway, stands on a small rocky islet 15kms west of Denpasar. Visitors flock here for the postcard-like setting, while the Balinese revere this pagoda style temple as deeply as they do their mountain shrines.
There are also islands to explore off the coast of southern Bali; Hindu pilgrimage island and diving spot Nusa Penida, and laid back Lombok can both be accessed via boat from Sanur.
