2nd Day Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Glaciers & Northern Lights
Over breakfast you can imagine the day ahead of you; one of huge thundering waterfalls, endless rolling valleys, volcanic black sand beaches, glistening glaciers and tiny church spire marked villages interspersed with dramatic ice age sculpted landscapes. You’ll drive down route 1 (there’s no route 2!) to the infamous Eyjafjallajökull whose eruption in 2010 halted all European air travel.
En-route you’ll explore two of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss and on a clear day, have the opportunity to see the two surrounding glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull. Continuing on you’ll stop at Vik close to which is Reynisfjara, a black sand beach, with basalt column formations and the famous Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean before heading east to Kirkjubaejarklauster across vast lava fields flecked with moss against a backdrop of imperious mountains. Check in at the Hotel Geirland for supper (payable locally) after which set off on the evening’s Northern Lights Hunt.
3rd Day Glaciers, a Glacial Lagoon & Northern Lights
Today’s star attraction will be the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon on the edge of Vatnajökull with its weathered bergs gradually shaping themselves before drifting out to the ocean. Such drama does Jökulsarlon provide that Hollywood Producers can’t stay away: ‘A View to a Kill’, Die another Day’ and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider were all part filmed there. During the drive the land of ice and fire will be before you creating a beautifully dramatic environment and giving you the opportunity to view the numerous glacier outlets displayed by Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull.
After lunch drive to the roots of Fláajökull, a glacier tongue of Vatnajökull where you can walk and get up close and personal with the glacier. If you’ve never been on a glacier the experience will blow you away; it’s as if you can feel its energy and raw power and Vatnajökul is the largest one in Europe. After returning to your hotel for supper you’ll hunt for the Northern Lights again most especially if you missed them the night before.
4thDay A Secret Lagoon, Geysers & Gullfoss
After breakfast, set off along the Island’s south shore to Hvammsvegur close to the village of Fludir and the somewhat ironically named Secret Lagoon. Originally the local swimming pool the pool and geysers fell into disuse in the 40’s but is now what the Blue Lagoon ought to be: an authentic, pristine geothermal experience. The several geothermal spots and a little geyser which erupts every 5 minutes pools’ natural surroundings and rising steam gives the place an almost fairy tale air with the water keeping a more or less constant 38-4 throughout the year.
After a soothing bathe head for the Geysir area where Strokkur, the great geyser shoots a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every 5- 10 minutes in a thrilling display of nature’s forces. Continue to Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, created by the river Hvítá, which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 m (105 ft.) deep before returning to Reykjavik through the Thingvellir National Park where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are gradually separating at a rate of a few centimetres per year. Overnight at the
