Your Destinations

Reykjavik
Just 200 miles below the Arctic Circle, Reykjavík with its long time ‘cool’ reputation is a place to chill in at night savouring food to die for, and get out of during the day enjoying safari adventures. Dominated by Perlan the most dramatic clutch of water tanks in the world and Hallgrimskirka, the city’s Lutheran parish church echoing basalt lava flows, Reykjavik is the gateway to the rest of Iceland.  On the city’s doorstep are wild, romantic places with narrow fjords, deep ravines, vast glaciers, moraine deserts, dormant volcanoes, thunderous waterfalls and spouting geysers.

Vík í Mýrdal
With just 290 inhabitants the southernmost village in Iceland sits overlooked by the glacier Myrdalsjokull and highlighted by Reynisdrangar basalt sea arches, black sand beaches and its signature rock arch Dyrhólaey, a rocky promontory poking out into the Atlantic. To its east lie vast outwash plains stretching along to the Jokulsarlon iceberg lagoon and to the west Skogafoss and Seljandfoss waterfalls.

Your Tour

Sit back and spend your Iceland holiday discovering the island’s legendary geological icons and your nights under a canopy of stars spotting the Aurora. Take in the Geyser that gave the world the name; Gullfoss the Golden Fall; Jokulsarlon, the iceberg lagoon and the unpronounceable Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted with such spectacular consequences in 2010. And each night max out your chances of seeing the legendary Aurora.

Being roughly the size of England with barely 140,000 people living outside of Reykjavik, you can imagine urban light pollution is not a big problem. The old Icelandic adage ‘if you don’t like the weather just wait a bit’ is also important, the prevailing Westerlies clearing cloud quickly to give you a better than even chances of seeing Lady B – The Aurora Borealis - dancing every night of your stay.

Your Itinerary

Transfer to the Centerhotel Plaza. Spend the evening as you will with supper options at restaurants MAR or Kopar.

2nd Day Reykjavik – Vik
After breakfast meet your guide and set off for the Geyser area with Strokkur spouting 40m high every 5 to 10 minutes, steaming fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools. Continue to Gullfoss, the ‘golden falls’, where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before torrenting down a large gorge between the Mid Atlantic Ridge’s tectonic plates. Continue to Vik with the ocean on one side of you and Iceland’s mountainous interior on the other, stopping off at Fridheimer stables to see Knutur & Helena’s beautiful 5 gaited Icelandic horses put through their paces. Overnight at Hotel Edda. Dinner, Aurora presentation and search.
3rd Day Vik – Jokulsarlon - Vik
After breakfast drive along the southeast coast across bridges fording dramatic outwash plains interspersed with black sand beaches and lava fields arriving at the Jokulsarlon Lagoon. The Lagoon’s luminous blue icebergs tinted with black volcanic dust float in the Lagoon for several years gradually self-sculpting themselves into different shapes before finally working their way out to sea. Return to Vik via Skaftafell with its dwarf birch and mountain ash sheltering beneath Oraeftafell. Dinner and Aurora search.

4th Day Vik – Reykjavik
Breakfast and then along the coast to see two of Iceland’s plunge falls: Seljalandsfoss spills straight off the cliffs of the former coastline side dropping straight down into a shallow pool at your feet whilst Skógafoss produces so much spray it’s invariably arched with a rainbow. Then to Eyjafjallajokull, still seething from its eruption in 2010 and where a short film demonstrates the fortitude of local farmers in coping with it. Last call of the day will be the Blue Lagoon for a bathe in its enveloping turquoise waters. Overnight at Centerhotel Plaza.

5th Day Reykjavik – UK
Leave relatively early for Keflavik International Airport for your return flight or of course extend your stay.
