Located around 4km southeast of Fira, the lovely village of Messaria boasts Cycladic charm alongside some of Santorini's finest wines. Its very name in Greek suggests its location almost in the middle of the island, making it convenient for visiting the caldera, the beaches and interesting archaeological sites.
Surrounded by gardens and vineyards, Messaria is bound to impress with outstanding architecture - a striking blend of the aristocratic and the original. As you stroll along narrow alleyways, admire old neoclassical mansions stood next to small white houses in the characteristic Cycladic style. The numerous taverns here offer a variety of authentic Greek dishes and lively entertainment in their colourful atmosphere, whilst wine tasting here is also an exquisite experience - this area is responsible for the island's largest wine production!
Don’t miss a visit to the churches of Metamorphosis of Sotiros and Agia Irini, both dating from the late 17th century. And, although there are frequent bus connections and taxi services, it’s worth taking a long walk back from Fira under the moonlight, provided you are romantic and fit enough! Other paths, passing right outside the Markezinis Suites entrance, are ideal for hiking around the peaceful area.
