Rethymno is rich in history and culture; its old town was built almost entirely by the Venetians. Its buildings date from the 16th century and are characterized by arched doorways and stone staircases. Notable sights include the small harbour, the Great Gate, the Piazza Rimondi and the Venetian Loggia.
