The Experience

"Have a unique 'out of body' experience usually reserved only for astronauts, without having to blast off into outer space! All you need to do is board one of these few aircraft in the world which is specially designed for parabolic flight.

Everyone who has taken this step, describes weightlessness as the same strange and unforgettable sensation of lightness of being, the total absence of weight. The temptation to play is irresistible. All movements, even the simplest, must be reinvented. It seizes the imagination.

And yet all this is entirely without danger, without any consequence other than the experience being engraved on your memory, the recollection of this amazing escape from earth's gravity.
You can live the dream, with no anxiety at all. The unknown which awaits you is simply the pure joy of discovery.

With more than 3 000 parabolas to my name, I personally experience every one of them with the same sense of excitement and enchantment as the first, more than twenty five years ago. The transition between the sensation of excess weight which is necessarily produced when bringing the nose of the aircraft up into its skywards trajectory, then the total disappearance of the sensation of weight, continues to be a magical moment for me.

There has never been a parabolic flight in the course of which I have not found myself, for a moment, sitting on the ceiling and looking down at the cabin turned upside down. I always take a tennis ball with me, because of the fascination caused by its behaviour in flight. During the initial phase, when the ball is tossed upwards, it falls so rapidly that you think you are watching a film which has been speeded up. Then, during the transition, the “film” becomes slow motion. In zero gravity, weightlessness, I let the ball go just by withdrawing my fingers, and it stays motionless in front of me, the only thing to remind me that I'm not dreaming."

Jean-François Clervoy
ESA astronaut
President of Novespace
Initiator of parabolic flights in Europe

How it works

The commercialisation of zero gravity flight contributes to the financing of space research.

Parabolic flights are carried out on board an aircraft, in this case an Airbus A310 for the Air Zero G flights, which follows a flight profile which alternates between ascent and descent manoeuvres, divided into phases. These manoeuvres, called parabolas, each allow for up to 22 seconds of weightlessness. During each of these periods, the objects and persons on board do not experience gravity any longer, and can float freely in the aircraft cabin.

Before the parabolic manoeuvre, the aircraft flies horizontally, at an altitude of 20 000 ft. The crew prepare for the parabola by steadily increasing speed to about 810 km/h, the maximum authorized for this type of aircraft.

The pilot then pulls back steadily on the stick, and the aircraft ascends nose-up until it attains an attitude of 47°, at an altitude of about 25 000 ft . During this phase, referred to as the “entry phase”, a powerful sensation of weight, or hypergravity, is incurred, with the passengers weighing 1.8 times their weight on Earth.

Once the attitude angle of 47° has been reached, the flight engineer cuts back the engines significantly, and the pilot eases off on the stick. This moment is called the initiation, with the aircraft entering the parabolic phase, and consequently the weightlessness period.

At the start of the weightlessness phase, the aircraft continues to ascend until it reaches an altitude of 28 000 ft, then it starts to descend again, for 22 seconds, with the passengers floating freely in the cabin throughout the whole of this phase.

When the aircraft reaches a nose-down attitude of 42°, at an altitude of about 25 000 ft, the pilot again pulls back steadily on the stick so as to come out of the parabola, and regain the initial level of flight. During this phase, called the “exit phase”, there is once again a powerful sensation of apparent weight, or hypergravity, and passengers weight 1.8 times their weight on Earth. The aircraft then reverts to a horizontal position for about two minutes, before entering into the next parabola.

Good to Know

- Please bring a bag to store your personal belonging during the flight. Envelopes will be also available for you, to insert your valuables and store them in a secure place during the flight.

- Please note you will wear the Air Zero G overall suit during the flight. We suggest to wear light garment and a t-shirt underneath.

- Please wear sport shoes with a thin and white sole (to avoid any marking of the white free floating area on board). After aircraft take off, you will remove your shoes, give them to the instructor, and wear Air Zero G socks instead.

- Cameras and video cameras are installed on board, and an experienced cameraman will take pictures and video on board. You will of course be given pictures and movies after the flight. So you do not really need to shoot by yourselves weightless pictures, and we suggest you fully enjoy this unique experience without bothering taking such pictures! You can anyhow bring your own camera/video, as long as it fits in overall suit pocket and it is wrist-strap equipped (free floating is a reality on board…).

Caution: You cannot embark with a GoPro camera fixed on a helmet or on a selfie stick, in order to avoid any injury with other passenger.

- Do not hesitate to bring with you your favorite object, as long as it is not fragile, fits in the pocket of your suit and your instructor confirms you can board and fly with it. In case of doubt, send us an email with a picture to check if you will be allowed to take it on board.

- Please avoid wearing jewels (earrings, necklace), which could hurt you, hang on, or being lost.

- As on any commercial flight, weapons, blunt objects, liquids, etc, are forbidden on board, as usual.

- Water bottles and sweets will be available on board at the end of the flight, you are not allowed to carry food or drink on board. There are no toilets in the aircraft (an alternate solution will be offered if needed). Your instructor will remind you this “detail” before embarking.

- To smokers, we suggest you avoid any cigarette on the morning before the flight, as smoking favors transport sickness.

- Please bring a valid ID card to show at your arrival in Novespace facility (and also one for accompanying person) for ramp access.

-  Pedagogical and scientific experiences are forbidden on board this public flight.

- If you are with an accompanying person he/she will assist the briefing, go to the restricted area to visit the aircraft, attend the lunch, diploma ceremony and all conferences.

- To handle smoothly a possible flight delay or D+1 flight postpone, we suggest you to book a refundable/change permitted airline ticket to go back home, although Air Zero G never experienced a flight postponement.

If you have done it yet, please give us the mobile phone number to contact you on the day before or on the day of the flight, just in case.

-  Last, do not forget to tell us the size of your flight suit if not done already.

Information regarding  transport sickness:
Even though we have noticed on the previous flights that one passenger every ten suffers from transport sickness. To avoid that, we invite you to follow closely your instructor recommendations, and to limit the risk to suffer from transport sickness one step further, we recommend you buy medicines as Kwells which is used on board our scientific flights and is really efficient to limit such risk.

This medicine can be bought on the internet on : https://fr.treated.com/mal-des-transports/kwells or http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_3505_kwells-tablets-12x.html

Before taking such medicine makes sure that you don’t have contraindication to it (this should be clearly indicated on your medical certificate).

Shuttle service
If you have booked a hotel in Merignac hotels area, there will be a free shuttle service which will leave at 7:30 am from the Quality Suite Hôtel to Novespace facility. At the end of the day, the shuttle can bring you back to the hotels area or to the airport terminal.

If you come by your own by car or by taxi, please find at the end of this briefing a map and indications to get there.

Accompanying person
If you wish to be accompanied by a friend or relative during this incredible day, we remind you that a prior booking is mandatory. Such opportunity is offered for a price of 200€ (VAT included). It includes aircraft visit, participation to ground activities, meals (breakfast and lunch) and personal AIR ZERO G overall suit. If you are interested, please send an email to France@airZeroG.com.

Pre-Flight Dinner
We have booked a table in the restaurant of Quality Suite hotel on February 13th at 19:30.

If you wish, Novespace is pleased to invite you as a courtesy at this dinner to give you the opportunity to meet other passengers and Air Zero G team before the D Day.

Please inform us before February 1st  if you intend to come to the dinner and if you will use the bus shuttle from Merignac Quality Suite Hotel to Novespace facility in the morning and/or at the end of the day, by email at France@airzerog.com .
