Your Destination

Recognised by Lonely Planet as Best in Europe 2015, Akureyri has become a favourite winter/spring fun getaway for travellers.  The Hlíðarfell Ski Area is located minutes away from town, providing a professional, family-friendly and affordable ski resort open through April.

Though close to the Arctic Circle, winter temperatures are warmer than one would expect (around 0°C (32°F).  It is also possible to glimpse northern lights here through mid-April on clear, cold nights.

Your Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival. After your arrival at Keflavik airport, head through passport control and pick up your luggage.  The FlyBus transfer bus is outside the arrivals hall (follow the signs).  Please show your confirmation to the attendant on board and let him or her know that you will be going to Reykjavík Domestic Airport for taking a flight to Akureyri.  Check in for your evening Reykjavík to Akureyri flight with Air Iceland for your 45-50 minute flight.  Upon arrival at Akureyri Domestic Airport, you will be met at the airport by a local guide who will drive you to KEA Hótel Norðurland for check in.

The rest of the evening is open for your own activities.  Akureyri is a small town that has a very active cultural scene, including its own art gallery streets. It is easy to take a stroll around the town, enjoying shops, galleries, cafés, and pubs.

Akureyri also has beautifully-resorted historic buildings that give the town an old-style Scandinavian charm.  Visitors enjoy a nice variety of restaurants and a friendly yet lively nightlife scene, especially on weekends.  The city’s swimming pool is one of the nicest in the country, featuring many types of hot tubs, lap and wading pools and a steam bath.

You might even be interested in trying an evening northern lights hunt!
Day 2.   Visit to the Volcanic Wonders of Lake Mývatn. Breakfast at your hotel.  Please be in the lobby at 9am for departure on the Lake Mývatn Classic Tour.  Today you will experience an amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts, geothermal activity, geology and Icelandic history.  The Lake Mývatn Nature Reserve has been affected by volcanic activity from nearby Mt. Krafla, created a surreal wonderland of lava, rock formations and steam vents.  The Mid-Atlantic Ridge dividing North America from Europe also carves its way through Mývatn.

It is especially beautiful when winter‘s snow brings out the mysterious shapes in the rocks.  The area has become known as a winter filming location for Season Three of Game of Thrones.  The upcoming Fast and Furious 8 movie was also filmed here during February 2016.
Begin the day by stopping at Góðafoss Waterfall en route to Lake Mývatn. Góðafoss, the 'Waterfall of the Gods' is a picturesque waterfall that has connections to the Old Viking pagan religion (Ásatru).  The first stop at Lake Mývatn is the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðagígar; though they look like craters, they were not formed by a volcanic explosion!
Visit the main highlights of the Mývatn area.  The surreal Hverir geothermal field has a multi-coloured landscape, bubbling mud pots and hissing steam vents.  Grjótagjá Rift looks into a deep hot spring where Icelanders once bathed (the water is now too hot).
Walking trails take you through an area of beautiful, strange basalt formations at Dimmuborgir.  The last stop is the Mývatn Nature Baths, a bright blue hot spring lake.  Enjoy a swim in this peaceful place with an amazing view over the surrounding lava fields.  Afterwards, head back to Akureyri for your overnight stay.

Day 3. Flight to Reykjavík. Breakfast at your hotel. Free time in Akureyri until your flight to Reykjavík (morning or afternoon flight based on availability).   You will be transferred to Akureyri Airport for your flight to Reykjavík.  On your own you will transfer to your overnight hotel in Reykjavík (4 star, examples:  Fosshótel Reykjavík, Grand Hótel Reykjavík or similar).  Taxis are plentiful.  The Reykjavík Bus System Strætó also has a stop at the Reykjavík Domestic Airport. Rest of the day is your own to spend as you like.  Overnight in Reykjavík.

Day 4. Departure. Breakfast at your hotel.  FlyBus airport transfer to Keflavik airport for your flight home.  Please be prepared to depart your hotel about 3 hours before your flight.

Optional: extra day in Akureyri (which may be added at the next stage of the booking process)
This area offers many things to do. Perhaps you´ll try a culture-themed  walking tour.  Enjoy a food and beer tour of North Iceland.  Visit the town of Siglufjörður, made famous by the BBC Icelandic thriller show Trapped. Try some horseback riding or enjoy skiing at the nearby Hlíðarfjall Ski Resort (easy to take a taxi here from town).
