Weekends in Surrey
Take a weekend break in Surrey, England’s leafiest county
If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air and a break from the stresses and strains of city life, Surrey is a perfect location for restoring your sense of wellbeing, and we offer luxurious accommodation at at discounted prices just to make your weekend perfect. Fancy a long country walk with breath-taking views? The Surrey Hills stretch across the county from Farnham to Oxted, offering a gorgeous array of grasslands, heaths and woodlands to explore. The hills are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it’s easy to see why; their most famous beauty spots include The Devil’s Punchbowl, a naturally formed amphitheatre, and Box Hill, a favourite picnic spot, with its commending views across the South Downs. Less well known are the Frensham Ponds, (or Surrey’s beach if you’re a local); these provide a welcome invitation to soak your tired feet!
Soak in Surrey’s rich heritage and history
Whether you’re a lover of afternoon tea in picture-postcard villages, or of guided tours around some of the finest English architecture, Surrey won’t let you down. Hampton Court Palace, built by Henry VIII and reputed to be the king’s favourite residence, is the ‘crown jewels’ of Surrey’s historical buildings. Also well worth a visit are the 18th century mansion, Hatchlands Park, which is set in acres of ancient woodland, or the Elizabethan Loseley Park, which has changed little since it was built by Sir William More in 1562. Surrey was also the site of the signing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215; a memorial to this historic event can be seen in Runnymede to the south of the county.
For art-lovers there are some hidden gems to be discovered in this surprising county. The Watts Gallery, exhibiting the paintings of Victorian artist George Frederic Watts, is located in the charming village of Compton which promises sumptuous cream teas for foot-weary gallery visitors. The Sculpture Park in Churt offers art on a grand scale. Here you will find over 600 sculptures by a range of artists, set in 10 acres of stunning parkland.
Experience a day at the races in Surrey
Sporting activities are the best form of relaxation for many people; if that includes you, Surrey won’t disappoint. If you love the thrill of the race, there are no less than four famous racecourses in the county, including Epsom Racecourse, which houses the world’s greatest flat racing event, and royalty’s favourite racecourse, Sandown Park. For those who need to get active in order to shake off the city stress, there’s a stunning ‘Wild Wood’ tree-top experience in Guildford.
