With its densely packed forests, magical fairytale castles, medieval towns, and luxurious black sea resorts, modern Romania offers everything the modern traveller could ever need.

A city of great contrasts, Bucharest is not to be missed

A trip to Romania is not complete without spending time in the bustling capital Bucharest. The cultural heart of Romania, this fascinating city is an intoxicating mix of Soviet-era buildings with the more classical art nouveau, which give it a unique evocative atmosphere unlike any other city in Europe. And you won’t be short of things to see or do in this beautiful city.

Travellers can take a tour of the preposterous Soviet-era Palace of Parliament, which was built as the private residence of former Dictator Nicolae Ceau?escu and is considered to be the heaviest building in the world. Or explore one of the world's most fascinating bookshops, Carturesti Carusel, which offers an eclectic display of books spread over four stories, along with a gloriously decadent coffee shop on the top floor.

Explore the Danube Delta

Once you’ve experienced the intoxicating atmosphere of Bucharest you may want to head out of the city for a few days. What better place to go than the Danube Delta, a UNESCO world heritage site - this beautiful, tranquil setting is spread over 1500 sq km and offers the chance to see some rare bird species, catch some fish or just sit back and relax on one of the beautiful secluded beaches near Sulina.

The seafood around this area is also considered to be some of the best in Europe, so why not enjoy a lunch of locally caught grilled sturgeon and zander croquettes, washed down with Aligote, Merlot or Muscat wines at one of the many independent restaurants located onshore in Tulcea. The local fish soup, a leftover from communist times, has also become a favourite of gastronomes from across the world.

Hiking, biking and skiing

Looking for some action, Romania has that too. The Carpathian mountains in the North of the country are home to hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails which wind their way through densely packed Spruce forests. The mountainous landscape is also dotted with medieval fairytale castles, including Peles, the most beautiful and opulent of them all. But they are not all the stuff of fairytales, some of them may feature in a nightmare or two. Bran Castle was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Poenari was once a fortress occupied by Vlad the Impaler.

During the winter months the mountains of Postavaru offer skiing to match the best of Austria and Switzerland but at much lower prices. The resort of Poiana Brasov is the most popular and offers slopes suitable for all levels of skier, from beginner to advanced, with expert tuition also available.
