Teneriffe holidays are fun for the whole family
An island of two halves, Tenerife has something for everybody: will it be the buzzing, lively south, or the tranquil beauty of the northern part of the island? Those looking to party will want to head straight to Playa de Las Américas, where shops, exquisite restaurants and energetic nightclubs line the beachfront, while those craving peace and calm will adore the botanical gardens, colonial architecture and cobbled streets of Puerto de la Cruz. Sun-worshippers and thrill-seekers alike will love Tenerife’s stunning beaches, whether it’s water sports or simply relaxing with a book that’s on the cards.
With its gently sweeping sands and calm seas, Tenerife holidays are perfect for families. There are many family-friendly resorts, including hotels located right on the beach, in Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and Playa Paraíso. Top activities for children and adults alike include a trip to Siam Park or Loro Parque. You could be forgiven for thinking you’d taken a wrong turning and ended up in Thailand upon entering Siam Park, which has been voted the world’s best water park for its stunning white sand beach and thrilling rides, while a visit to the Loro Parque zoo promises a memorable day among penguins, gorillas and parrots, to mention just a few. For an alternative animal adventure, hop on a boat from Puerto Colon marina in Costa Adeje for a whale watching trip and the chance to snorkel with turtles.
Feel on top of the world at Teide National Park, Teneriffe
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007, the surreal landscapes of Teide National Park are a must-see for any visitor to Tenerife. The park centres around Mount Teide, a majestic volcano rising to 3,718m above sea level, making it the highest peak on Spanish soil. For those looking to take it easy, a cable car whisks visitors up to the top of Mount Teide in just eight minutes. Here you can expect awe-inspiring views of Tenerife and across to the other Canary Islands.
Visitors wanting to get their heart pumping a little more can enjoy a range of walking trails through the varied landscape: whether it’s a relaxing stroll or a more intense climb, there are routes and trails for all abilities. Among the most popular walking routes is the trail to the Roques de García, the remnants of an ancient volcanic crater wall that now stand as striking rock formations. If you’re feeling especially brave, you can even tackle Mount Teide itself – you can always take the cable car down again after the six-hour ascent! By virtue of its clear skies, Tenerife is also known for its excellent stargazing. This is especially true of Teide National Park, where the lack of light pollution draws budding astronomers in with their telescopes to see the glistening stars and planets. True star enthusiasts can even pay a visit to the Tenerife Observatory, which you will find atop Mount Teide.
Visit the picturesque town of Garachico on your holiday to Teneriffe
A charming town with a tragic history, Garachico offers visitors the opportunity to explore one of the oldest settlements in the Canary Islands. Established in 1500 by Italian merchants and for a long time the most important port on Tenerife’s northern coast, prosperous Garachico later suffered at the hands of nature. After a series of spectacular storms, floods and fires, in 1706 a major volcanic eruption destroyed the port and buried half the town in lava.
Nowadays, Garachico is a peaceful place – a calm oasis away from the island’s busier resorts. The quaint cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses provide the perfect setting for a relaxing stroll, while the town is also home to an array of historical treasures: the Santa Ana Church, the San Miguel Fortress and the San Francisco Convent. For something a little more adventurous, go for a dip at El Caletón. This set of natural swimming pools was formed by lava flows from the eruption in 1706, and more than makes up for Garachico’s lack of beach! Finish off a day of exploring with a meal at Los Pinos (specialising in traditional Canarian fare) or a seafood feast at Aristides. After a visit to Garachicos, you’ll certainly understand why the town’s motto is “Glorious in Adversity”.
Need to know: weather and food in Teneriffe
Tenerife boasts year-round sunshine and balmy temperatures that make it the perfect holiday destination throughout the year. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures usually peaking at around 28°C in July and August, with the weather remaining warm and dry in Autumn (an average high of 25°C in November) and the winters mild and generally dry (an average high of 20°C during Winter). If you’re travelling to escape the cold, the south and west of the island are the warmest parts, but no fear: there’s usually a refreshing breeze to keep the temperature comfortable on even the hottest days.
One of the joys of travel is experiencing new tastes. Typical Canarian food often centres around simple but sumptuous grilled meat or fish with “papas arrugadas” (traditional potatoes), but many people also visit for the delicious tapas on offer. Be sure to try some authentic, smooth and smoky “queso de cabra” (goat’s cheese) and the flavourful chicken dish “pollo al salmorejo”.
Whether you prefer an adventure-packed trip or would rather take it slow with days on the beach, holidays in Tenerife always deliver. With an ideal climate year-round, time spent exploring or relaxing here is a delight no matter the season, while the wide range of hotels and attractions on offer make the island the perfect destination for all types of traveller.
