Icelandic Delicacies To Enjoy

Iceland is an island nation so there are vast quantities of seafood to enjoy. Traditionally dried stockfish is used as an alternative to bread when eating a meal and is made from fresh fish, mainly haddock and cod. 'Fish of the day' is a common dish in restaurants but fish stew and Icelandic lobster are also very popular.

For those with a sweet tooth, Iceland has delicious sweet treats waiting to be enjoyed. Try Snúður or Pönnukökur if you want to try Icelandic food but aren't quite prepared to dive off the deep end. Snúður is cinnamon-filled bread that is rolled covered in a chocolate, caramel or sugar glaze. Pönnukökur (which are similar to pancakes) is served rolled up with either a sugar topping or folded with whipped cream and jam.

At the National Museum of Iceland you can see 'Skyr' which is a traditional Icelandic dairy product that resembles yoghurt but is actually a cheese. To adapt to modern eating habits, flavours such as vanilla, berries, mango, coconut and liquorice are added. Its heritage derives from Nordic culture but now is only common in Iceland. It serves as an Icelandic meal at any time of the day!
