Holidays to Puglia
Enjoy luxury holidays to Puglia with Voyage Prive and discover whitewashed vertical coastlines and historic hill-top in Italy’s unspoilt southern 'heel'.
Go back in time in the region's towns' ancient plazas
Often neglected in favour of tourist hot-spots like Tuscany, Puglia is the hidden away 'heel' of Italy's 'boot', where you can find a piece of bygone Mediterranean life. Begin your exploration in the hip port city of Bari, where you can enjoy Ciambotta – a locally famous fish-based stew, in the cobbled streets of the old town. From Bari make your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello and its dreamlike districts of Trulli – magical whitewashed settlements topped with distinctive cornices. Whatever you do, don’t miss the world class destination of Lecce, or the “Florence of the South” as it is known. Two thousand years old and brimming with architectural sights, such as the Baroque Church of Santa Croce and the ancient Teatro Romano, it is also situated conveniently near to the coast, for when you want a break from the sightseeing.
Make the most of the longest coastline of any region in Italy
You’re never far from the coast in this tall and slender part of Italy and that’s all the more reason to treat yourself to at least a few days there. Begin with the fishing town of Otranto, a picturesque seaside retreat nestled in the heel of the region. If you’re the easily bored type, it’s the perfect spot to throw in a spot of sightseeing too, possessing the most unique Norman cathedral in Italy. If you want to blend in with the locals, be sure to check out Polignano a Mare, a rocky outcrop of whitewashed buildings rising vertically from turquoise waters, just south-east of Bari.
Go inland and feast on the regional specialities
Besides its unbeatable coasts, Salento, the stiletto-shaped southern region of Puglia, is also celebrated for the quality of the wine its grassy inland areas produce. Further north, you can take in stunning countryside views from the tiny hill-top settlement of Altamura. Be sure to try the town’s famous bread, baked in traditional wood-fired ovens. For the more active, a visit to one of the region's national parks is a must. Take a tour past ancient tombs and castles at Alta Murgia National Park, or for unspoilt, lush green forests, Gargano National Park is the place to be. Nature enthusiasts will fall in love with Sentiero Airone, a coastal nature reserve in the north famous for its pink flamingos.
