Beach resorts of Lithuania
With a coastline stretching 99km, Lithuania's many beach resorts offer something for everyone. Its wide, sandy beaches are a haven for sun-seekers who enjoy luxury holidays. Visit the main tourist resort of Palanga, on the shore of the Baltic Sea in the north, where 18km of white sand and dunes make it Lithuania's most popular summer destination. The more intimate resort of Šventoji, close to the Latvian border, is popular among families. The port city of Klaip?da boasts forested seaside districts, yet it still retains its resort ambience.
There's plenty to do in Lithuania if you enjoy sight-seeing. With more than 1,000 monuments, buildings and historic artefacts on the sight-seeing tour routes, including UNESCO National Heritage Sites, there's something to suit all tastes. Lithuania's capital, Vilnius, famous for its medieval old town, has a fascinating mix of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Its 18th century cathedral, the hilltop Gediminas' Tower, offers breath-taking views. Lithuania's religious sights are impressive, including the world-famous, UNESCO-recognised Hill of Crosses. Fascinating buildings, including majestic churches, historic castles and fortresses adorn the whole country. The Trakai medieval castle dates from the Crusader-Pagan battles.
Cycling and walking activities in Lithuania
Lithuania has plenty of beautiful countryside to discover. If you prefer an adventure holiday, it's the ideal destination to explore by bicycle, with coastal cycle paths along the shoreline and quieter, rural routes through the peaceful countryside. Take in the nature reserve at Cape Vente, home to a summer population of 50,000 storks in the lagoon near Rusne, where friendly staff on one of Europe’s busiest bird migration routes are happy to talk to visitors.
Walkers and hikers won't be disappointed with Lithuania's popular walking and hiking routes. There are many famous trails that are popular with tourists, including the Dziackagiris sight-seeing route along the River Neris at Vilnius, the Duksta Cognitive Walkway near D?kštos and the Neris Regional Park, to name but a few.
Dining out and shopping
Lithuania has a rich culinary tradition. Local cuisine features locally-grown produce such as barley, rye, potatoes, beets, mushrooms and various greens. Dairy products are a speciality. Also popular are dumplings, doughnuts, crepes, pork and potato dishes. The national dish is cepelinai: potato dumplings stuffed with meat, cheese or mushrooms. International restaurants offer French, Italian and Indian cuisine.
Shopping malls are key institutions in every Lithuanian city. Retailers within each mall sell every type of goods, while shoppers can also enjoy dining out and entertainment while there. It's not unusual to spend a whole day at the mall, known as a "shopping and entertainment centre". Lithuania also has a range of quality supermarkets, high streets with a diverse range of smaller shops, and busy bazaars offering local goods, including the massive Wild East bazaar at Gari?nai.
