Experience luxury and adventure with Ras al-Khaimah holiday deals
Visit the city that’s literally the ‘top of the tent’
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are among the richest, and therefore most luxurious, holiday destinations in the world, but there are five more emirates in the UAE to explore, including Ras al-Khaimah. The emirate, and the city it shares its name with, are nestled in the north-east of the mainly arid country (Ras al-Khaimah literally means ‘top of the tent’), close to the Omani exclave of Musandam. Keep your eyes peeled for great Ras al-Khaimah deals and read on for a taste of what this modern city has to offer.
Ras al-Khaimah – the emirate
The region of Ras al-Khaimah is mainly desert, and great deals often include heart-stopping dune races through the dramatic expanses of sand found out in the wilderness. Another activity that takes advantage of the natural landscape is a four-wheel safari to Jebel Jais, one of the highest mountains in the United Arab Emirates. The crown prince of Ras al-Khaimah recently commissioned a road to be built up the peak, giving trekkers the chance to document unparalleled views of their surroundings. Finally, a trip to Ras al-Khaimah, or anywhere in the UAE for that matter, would be incomplete without dinner in a Bedouin desert camp. These can be booked while in the city and rates include local delicacies, such as shawarma, hummus and tabbouleh, soft drinks, camel rides and even belly dancing!
Ras al-Khaimah – the city
Once you’ve had your fill of the surrounding landscape, venture back towards the city, which, being positioned on the coast, boasts a number of excellent beaches and many luxurious resorts. Al Marjan Island, a 12 mile long stretch of four artificial isles, is one of the most popular spots for holidaymakers and further testament to the UAE’s construction capabilities. If you want more of a flavour of local life, the Old City is the place to be, with souqs and artisans’ workshops selling local wares. If you thought that the Emirates were just full of identikit modern buildings, think again: Dhayah Fort and Sheba’s Palace date back centuries, while The National Museum of Ras al-Khaimah, although blocky and modest, has stood since the 18th century, and was formerly the home of the ruling family.
